This is meant to be a flame throwing comment so you have been warned!
Give me a break on the Boxster already....and the ugly Cayman as well!
I love the Carerra and no matter what kind of performance the Boxster has or will have would ever make me want one!
I wish they would quit trying to rattle everyone's cage and stop comparing the 2 cars...especially with superior equipment on one and inferior on the other.......They must be running out of crap to discuss in these magazines.
Just my humble opinion!

the new cayman S is really nice.
I had my doubts, but it actually loks like a new car...not a hard-topped boxster.
I'm a TT guy, but if i werent spoiled by 500Hp and wanted a nimble, great handling scalpel for trackwork - id get a cayman. Its the same engine as the 997...just 3.4 not 3.6L.
hooray for porsche...i actually like their pricing - as it'll be the *real* porsche of the bunch, totally erasing the chickcar/poseur/poorman's porsche rep the boxster has unfairly gotten.

i am not one for a boxster. but i will say the are very quick around a track the handle very good the 911 of course is faster and with the correct driver the 911 will smoke it, for someone wanting to get a good handeling car for the track its a pretty good investment............ but there is nothing like a 911 on the track !

thats why porsche builds both--some people see the 911 platform as a step back (engine in the wrong place, token rear seats, etc). robert, have you driven a 987S? i was very impressed and think it's superior to the last 996 i owned. i'm not surprised it's being compared to the 997. imo, the new cayman will be everything true porsche enthusiasts have asked for...i'm holding off on buying another p-car till i test one.

I really like the 987S. I like the interior and handling dynamics better than the 997, even if it is a couple ticks slower. If it wasn't for that little extra space and ability to carry more than two in a pinch, the fact that I'm not a convertible person, and timing (ordered the 997 in July, long before we knew details of the 987), I'd have chosen the 987S, so I can easily see how others would as well.
I was part of a Cayman focus group, gave my suggestions, and don't like what they've done with it in terms of styling or price. IMO the 987S and base 997 are better looking and are better values.

I didn't read the article but if it's based on price that would be comparing apples and oranges, they're targeting different people with different price ranges.
I look at the Boxter 2 ways:
1. It's a nice sporty small convertible to have and it's a Porsche, a high quality German engineered car. If you wanted a light and small convertible it's a pretty good choice.
2. If I had limited funds, perhaps because I have kids to send to college, a wife soaking my money or whatever, and I love Porsche and just have to have a new one, the Boxter is a good choice.
Compare the Boxter to the equivalent of the convertible by BMW, but not the Carrera that's a different league.

My post is not about being in the same league as a 911. I laugh cause I see the defensive mechanism that is evident by resorting to insults. Don't you post on rennteam(rss996)? If so(even if you don't) the defensiveness is very obvious. You seem threaten if anyone or anything is said in favor of a Boxster/Cayman. Personally I know what a Carrera is about..its a great performing car, but a lot to it is prestige and not the better performer. That is a fact. What superior equipment does a 997 have over a Boxster S (other than the obivious, more power)? I'm not here to say a Cayman or Boxster S is better than a 911, but I'm also stating some facts. The two are more different than anything, sorry but its the truth. Furthermore, I could own a 996/997. Its not about that. Some people like to see blindly.

What I love about the 911 is what it has more of than any other current Porsche, history.
Because of it's history the 911 has a soul, the current Porsche's may be automotive classics one day, but not today, not for me. You can talk HP, braking, handling, for all of time but you can't give a car history or soul.
I didn't grow up with posters on my wall of Boxster's, Cayman's or Cayenne's... it was the 911.
And so I say, that if Porsche produced a 500HP mid engine monster that was 10K less than a 911, it still could never take the place of a classic.
I'm getting all teary eyed, I have to go.

So, if you must have a 911 why on earth do you drive a 996?
The posters on your childhood bedroom walls, I'm sure, were not 996s?
If Porsche build a brand new rear-engined car that looked like a BMW M3 but called it the 998 and said it was a 911 - would that make it a 911?
What defines a 911?
