Speaking as a former two-time Boxster owner (some would say two-time loser but that's okay) and a current 997 (PASM/Chrono, blah, blah, blah) let me say that if the Boxster had one of the the 2005 Carrera engines, the 911 would be easily defeated in almost every driving scenario you could come up with except drifting! Hahahaha! The Boxster is a better car, but it just lacks horsepower (on purpose by Porsche); you can't change the laws of physics unless you travel to a parallel universe or somethin'. That said, both the Boxster and Carrera are both fine automobiles with few true competitors in the world's production car line up IMHO.

I believe you are correct. Just the interior SOUND of the Boxster S is a thing of sonic beauty. The rear seats of the Carrera S are wasted space for me as I bought it for the motor and the gearbox, so my recurring wet dream is a Cayman S offered stock with the Carrera S's 3.8 litre, 355bhp, 295fpt. powerplant. If Porsche would just add $12K to the Cayman S base price for the 3.8 litre motor, then I'd add the PCCB's and a rubber bib. Oh flip, I drool just thinking about the power to match the rightous sound....

Hey JohnnyN -

My thoughts exactly! If they ever make one of these, go ahead and place an order for two because I will be lined up right there with you. I'm hoping they will throw in the bib as a freebie.

thats why porsche builds both--some people see the 911 platform as a step back (engine in the wrong place, token rear seats, etc). robert, have you driven a 987S? i was very impressed and think it's superior to the last 996 i owned. i'm not surprised it's being compared to the 997. imo, the new cayman will be everything true porsche enthusiasts have asked for...i'm holding off on buying another p-car till i test one.

I think the enthusiast's wanted a dry sump engine......

I Love the 997 (and all past 911's), I respect the Boxster but have only a small desire to own one, recognize that may be irrational, but the decision ( and humans in general ) is not driven by rationality.

I have a feeling that once people start test driving the Cayman, there are going to be a lot of 911 orders switched to the Cayman.

"How funny is it that Boxster owners like to see their car is in the same league as the 911......Why dont they buy an Evo or something for less money that out performs the Boxster?????????????????????????????????"

Nike says, "Just do it"

Lance Armstrong says, "It's not about the bike"

Having raced wheel-to-wheel for 11 years, I say, "Zero to 60 is nice, and Skidpad G's are interesting, but it's much more about the driver than the car. Get some track time, and let's talk then. Don't disrespect a particular car, just because its statistics in Car Mags don't appear the best. If you can't optimize the car, the specs are academic."

I personally have seen incredible performances by a particular driver in an early 70's 911 that would blow away anyone I've seen in a GT-3. Just my opinion.
