Default Option 482 - TPMS can now be ordered.

Received a call from my dealer. Tire Pressure Monitoring System is now showing up as an option on future or changable orders. Does anyone know the price?

It is good to have since the tires have such a minimal sidewall. Since the wheels are about $1K to replace (and tires $400?) nice to know you have a problem before damage occurs. At least that's how I thinbk of it. My 04 M3 has a low pressure warning system and it actually saved me more trouble already.

Yeah, I know. It's like we're subconsciously forced to get it. The fear of wheel damage motivates you to think the TPMS pays for itself. Just more (expensive?) stuff to get messed up.

Does the 997 have a spare?

If not, it could buy you some miles.

No spare so it should be freaking standard! Also my car has the idiot light for it on the speedo.

BTW. The Feds are going to make it a standard safety device on all cars starting in 2007.

Does anybody know the price for this option? Will it be the typical $800-$900 Porsche charges for the small stuff?

The type of system that reports actual PSI to the dash is fantastic. Warm the car, roll off, check the tire pressure in all four tires individually, head out or head to an air pump. My M3 had the type of system that measures speed of tire rotation... not my favorite but better than nothing.

The dash read out system was/is standard on the GM plastic 2 seater and on days with high or low temps and/or changing altitudes from say 6000 ft. to sea level (Tahoe to San Francisco) it was amazing to see data of how pressure would fluctuate. I've left Tahoe with 40 PSI, hit 47+ going over the passes in the heat, and found only 30 PSI in the morning after overnighting in a cool SF hotel garage because the tires had be filled at 6000 ft.

The GM system was transferable among aftermarket rims as well. Very useful tool and I admit I was surprised Porsche, of all companies, didn't embrace it.

So, is the Porsche system simply an 'idiot light' or does it report PSI? Anyone know for sure? Perhaps model year 2006 might be different?

I will say this: I will likely call my dealer and change my order to add this feature for my July build. I have this on my M5. 5 days after I picked up the M5, the MID (instrument readout) reports "tire malfunction". WTF? I call the dealer and he says it means the TPMS senses a flat. I check all the tires - and nothing doing. So, I reset the system per dealer instructions thinking it was a calibration error. 24 hours later, I get the same warning. I check the tires - and again nothing doing.

So, now I am sure its a system malfunction. I drive for a day with the error showing and it starts raining. I pull into my garage after work, check the tires again, and again nothing doing. I am quite frustrated. The next morning, I get ready to leave for work and there is a faint gurgle noise - barely audible. It just so happens that the left rear tire is sitting in the one remaining puddle in my garage - the drip-off from the previous day's rain. I push the car back a few inches and what do I see? A frucking bolt is embedded in my tire and there is a very VERY slow leak. The TPMS was able to read that very slow leak when, to the naked eye, the tire was absolutely perfect.

So I was pissed that I needed a new z rated tire 5 days after delivery of the Beast, however, the TPMS worked flawlessly. It really makes me want this again, whether its an 'idiot light' or actual PSI readout.

Sounds familiar. Though I had no mystery leak when my brand new M3 got a flat about two weeks after delivery. It was good to have because mine happened on the interstate and I was able to pull over in a "leisurely" manner. Darn thing saved the tire and possibly the wheel. BTW, I just had it patched, didn't bother with a new tire to keep speed rating since keeping a license with sustained speeds over 90mph is impossible around here.

TPMS shows up under tach as a readout of each tires pressure, and will alert you of any sudden drop in pressure. Great when you don't have a spare, may save a tire and wheel.

That is Euros, right? So, 691.00 EUR = 875.816 USD United States Dollars? Sorry for the ignorance, but my computer does not even have that symbol!!!

I take it that the option will be $800 - $900.

Texas911 mentioned the 'idiot light' which to me always meant a simple red light, as opposed to readout of PSI. If you are correct and there is, in fact, a PSI readout, well, I really like that.
