Default Okay, anyone using the GSM phone???

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for any help. I just purchased a GSM phone from Cingular. I removed the SIM card from the phone and inserted it into the drawer. The phone turns on and then says "initializing phone" then it remains stuck on "checking card". I AM ABLE to dial "9-1-1" using the "emergency call" option, but I can't get it to go past "checking card" Is it because Cingular didn't put a PIN on the card, and the PCM module is looking for one? The phone must be working since I can dial 911...ANy thoughts???

I think all / most cell phones can call 911 without a SIM card or being activated. Will be interested to see how your install works out.

...except for the Porsche PCN telephone module. It does not allow the emergency call option unless a SIM card is installed...

You need to install the SIM card.

Umm, perhaps you misunderstood my 1st post. I installed the SIM card in the drawer in the PCM and I only get a message stating "checking card" If I try to use the phone, it gives me a message stating "SIM card not ready"

Any thoughts?

My bad...the emergency function does work without a SIM card. I am getting a bit worried that the SIM card drawer is defective...

No worries. The SIM card I have works fine in the Cingular phone I got. It's an issue with the Porsche PCM telephone module reading the SIM card...Perhaps the tlephone module can't read 64K cards???

There are two types of SIM cards used in GSM phones with different voltage. The newer standard is 3 Volts and the older one is 5 Volts and there can be problems using 5 volt cards in newer phones.

Thanks for the heads-up on the newer SIM cards. But, I just picked up the brand new SIM card/phone yesterday...

I purchased option "666" telephone module for PCM (I recognize the irony...) and have had a "devil" of a time getting the SIM card to work in the POrsche PCM.

There is a separate add-on option called the "Porsche Cellular Solution" I think. I don't think it is the same thing as the integrated module in PCM installed at the factory, but I could be mistaken. I would wait to see if I can get this thing working with a Cingular SIM before plunking money down on a new PCM. Otherwise it'll be a $960 9-1-1 dialer...just great

If you have the PCM faceplate with SOS button and SIM card slot, it will be a available as a Tequipment retrofit (GSM phone module)

This running production change occured in Nov '04 The new faceplate is now the worldwide standard and will come on all 997 and 987 models that have PCM.

If you have the early faceplate with-out SOS button and SIM card slot, looks like you will NOT be able to retrofit.
