Is your 997S a 3.9 sec to 60 mph ? (R&T)

The anniversary model isn't the same engine.
Both Road and Track and Car and Driver are not off by over a .5 a second on JUST the 997s.

jeeva,
the 993tt was tested at 3.7 0-60 by both motor trend and car and driver. road and track pulled a 3.9 with it. i know this makes me a bit of a numbers geek, but i just thought i'd throw in my 2 cents.

I did a little looking and found:
8:12 --- Porsche 993 Turbo
looking for the outrageous claims of a 3.9 0-60 in 1996/97, but then I found:
http://www.caranddriver.com/article....rticle_id=3811
which confirms the above number, but I would say that for 1996/1997 it is fricken incredible.

Oh, I dunno, I see random "Ultimate car pages" quoting 3.7. I find it hard to believe that a super tuned turbo 993 gets 3.9 but a stock gets 3.7, but I am tired of looking. If anyone has a link to a real magazine site saying 993 turbo is X, that would be great.

Wow, this thread got more response than I expected. First off for the record, I will state that I have been a passenger in my friends '03 Turbo and it is one scary ride. I would not begin to think that in a quarter mile drag race I could beat his car with my 997 S especially with the all wheel drive. However, the reason he was a bit "PO'ed" as I said in my earlier thread was that his Turbo has been chipped for more turbo boost and has a Tubi exhaust. The car is definitely faster than stock (I drove it before and after mods.) and supposedly has closer to 450 to 460 horsepower. In driving both his car and my car I personally think the reason the 997 S and his Turbo were so closely matched from a rolling start at 30 MPH to 120 MPH was earlier development of bottem end torque in the 997 S. That was my seat of the pants feel. When you floor the 997, it just goes. In the Turbo there is a brief lag and then it takes off like a rocket. Now one could blame the chip, but remember, the lead car was an '01 Turbo. To his chagrin I was able to keep on his tail. Unfortunately, I have a couple of rock chips from the back of his car at 120 to prove it. Either way, all of the cars are awesome and it was just surprising to all involved how well the 997 S with its 3.8 L engine performed.
For what it is worth I also got the opportunity to chase a 2002 GT 2 on the same Porsche club outing. He wiped me like a rented mule!!!
Anyway, they are all great cars, I would own any of them, and its now time to get out and drive!!

Here's the edited highlights:
The 996TT is faster in a drag race than the 997S - THOUGH NOT BY AS MUCH AS YOU'D EXPECT.
The 996TT is faster round (most) tracks than a 997S - THOUGH NOT BY AS MUCH AS YOU'D EXPECT.
Fact - the 997S has eaten into the performance chasm once enjoyed by previous generation Turbo's - in a way which, say, the 996C2, against the 993 Turbo 4 did not.
Effectivley Porsche have created a new "half-way-house" option between the "cooking" Carrera and the Turbo - no suprise there, what is suprising, certainly from my perspective, is how close it gets to 996TT lap times (and indeed 996GT3 lap times).
This all bodes well for the forthcoming 997 TT & GT3 models (Both of which I have on order ), and indeed the future of the marque!

Don't get me wrong the 997S is a great car but don't even try to compare it with the Turbo!

Just to clear up some of the performance figure questions some were having about the 993 Turbo:
I have in front of me the July 1995 issue of Car and Driver, the "Supercar Shootout" issue.
The numbers? 0-30: 1.3 0-60: 3.7 0-100: 9.4 1/4: 12.3@114 0-130: 17.1
70-0: 162ft skidpad: 0.95 top speed: 176
Also in front of me is the June 1995 issue of Motor Trend "Bloodthirsty 911 Turbo" cover
Numbers: 0-30: 1.3 0-60: 3.7 0-100: 9.1 0-130: 16.2 1/4: 12.1@113.1 0-100-0: 13.0
60-0: 99ft
Also, July 1995 Road &Track "Turbo!" It's got a Polar Silver 993tt on the cover, driver side wheels off the ground as it corners
Numbers: 0-30: 1.3 0-60: 3.9 0-100: 9.9 1/4: 12.5@112.5
I'm not taking any sides on this 997S/Turbo debate, I'm just providing information to my fellow board members, who were looking for the performance figures of this particular car. I put a few thousand miles on a 993tt, and I loved everyone of them. With a 997S coming into the family soon, you know I'm itching to get behind the wheel, and I'm sure it will blow me away.

It doesn't bode well if the cars aren't built to take the abuse. When buying a sportscar, I don't care how fast or great it is when it's brand new - I want to know it's going to be reliable for thousands of miles of ownership, even after the warranty is up.
