Default Breakin period over!!

I finally got past the breakin period yesterday. Must say it was REALLY hard to stay below 4200 rpm's. The car is even better then I imagined. I went up an onramp yesterday and before I realized it I was WAY OVER the posted speed limit. It happend so fast and was so easy I guess I'm gonna have to be much more aware of my speed, it only felt like I was doing 80. Really smooth and the engine sounded fantastic, much better then the radio! Of course the wife was in the car and now she is afraid I'll go to jail, but man it might be worth it to drive the car like that all the time!!

Till I hit about 2003 miles. Truthfully I still have not had it above 6000 revs, but from my drive yesterday it seems that I did just fine without the extra 1000 rpm's! I'm still trying to be a little cautious with the engine. I'm sure that won't last, but I'm trying to give the engine every chance to get completely broken in.

I'm taking delivery of mine the middle of next week (if the roads stay dry for one day!). 2000 miles under 4000 RPMs? That is going to KILL me!

Technically it 4200 RPMs. But yea 2000 miles is murder. I lucked out and had to commute about 160 miles a day all of last week so I put close to 800 miles on it in one week. That really helped get me up to 2000. Don't worry too much you can still have quite a bit of fun staying under 4200, you just have to keep an eye on the tach cause it's so easy to go over that! When you do get past 2000 and get into it for the first time you'll have a smile on your face the whole day!

Anyone that buys a demo gets what it is.. a demo, taking the chance some bozo trying to prove something did everything in his power to cause a problem for the owner down the road.

(Not that YOU beating the **** out of a car that doesn't belong to you puts you in this catagory!)

Now believeing a Porsche dealer LET someone do this to a new $90K car for an hour?

I was kidding, do you really think a dealer would let someone do that for an hour?

I'll try a different sort of humor next time so you won't call me names!!!

oh yea ... I am sure almost any dealer would let you go way over the 4200 RPM level on a test drive of one of their demo cars that usually only have a couple of hundred miles on them .... absolutely

FL997,

Enjoy! It was hard keeping it under 4,200 rpms for me too...

I love driving home late when there is hardly any traffic. I just hit the sport button and go. Of course, I try not to go above 85-90, especially within the city here. But, even 85-90 in these cars puts a big grin on your face. Nothing like a Porsche.

There is no good reason to abuse an expensive car but it is hard not to check it out several times during the break in period. I was advised by several Porsche dealer employees that the engine is broken in and to get on it. I found that my 2 Boxsters burned some oil at first and then stopped which tells me the the rings were not seated. The official position of Porsche is just like a lawyer would advise....don't. I have 1,200 miles on my car and am taking it easy altho I was on the track at 200 miles and shifting at 4,000. Now some will say track use is abusive but I would not have purchased the car if I was not going to be on the track. If you are having trouble keeping your foot out of it, have a contest to see what the best gas mileage you can get because you will never do that again!

funny story. I was breaking in a Mini cooper S.1,200 miles before I really let it fly. Problem was I hit 1,200 miles and turned into what I thought was a perfect spot to let it rev. As I'm going up the hill, a big wide grin on my face, at the top of the hill I see about 4 cop cars. It was seat belt enforcement day, and they were pulling over anyone without a seat belt. They pulled me over, of course, and complimented me on wearing a seat belt as they wrote me up.

Sorry, just wrote a check for mine and the thought of someone hammering on a brand new 911 (not belonging to them) got to me.. the humor of it eluded me.

Some Sales guys could care less what happens to a car on a test drive. They want you to Rev it up so you'll buy it. The car is covered under warranty so why do they care if it gets abused. I've been on a few test drives where the Sales guy drove it harder than I did. So, when I decided to buy I picked a diferrent one on the lot that wasn't abused yet. But you can bet that if the car has 90 miles on it there were several hard test drives thrown in. Hopefully, they at least let the car warm up first.

Nothing wrong with redlining or otherwise driving a demo hard on a test drive. Test drives aren't meant to be gentle break-in periods for future owners...it's to get an idea of how the car performs.
