Default Phone module now available

Option 666
Phone Module for PCM
$960

Phone module for PCM allows users with a GSM phone to insert a SIM card and use the PCM as a hands-free telephone.

I wonder if the module includes a handset as well. It seems like a pain to keep switching the SIM card in & out of the cell phone & car system. I think GSM doesn't work well in certain parts of the country.

Bad Idea...sounds like a pain!

GSM is great in Europe but here in the states, it is CDMA for the best coverage. With the carriers here focusing on 3G technology, I would pass on the GSM option here in the U.S.

The handset for telephone module is option 668 for $260. It's a passive handset--can't be used to dial calls.

I think GSM was by far the best way to go. The AT&T and Cingular merge involved their GSM network, and I believe it is now the biggest network in the US (it used to be Verizon, with CDMA). GSM has many advantages over CDMA, including being able to swich phones easily by changing the SIM card, and, currently, the GSM networks are better at information transfer, such as internet access. Qualcomm is working very hard on the "next generation" CDMA, because the current CDMA technology is simply outdated.

GSM allows you to use the same account in your car as you do on your hand held phone. With CDMA, you would have to create a new account for the car, which the network treats as a whole new phone. Anyway, I think its great to be able to use my SIM card in the car....which I should be able to afford in three years or so...

They are 997 factory options, but likely will be available through Tequipment.
