Default Satelite Radio for 997

Available in the Cayenne model line is either a Satelite Radio XM or a Satelite Radio Sirius, each as a $990 option. Why is this not a current option on the 997?

No acceptable antenna solution according to the Porsche gods..(shark fin asthetics don't fly)

But WTF you can get the goofey looking rod antenna for improved AM reception for free

I'd love to have XM in my 997. I have it in my GMC pickup and it's awesome on long trips to not have to listen to the local yackfests.

Here's a thought: Porsche doesn't like shark-fins, and I tend to agree as they look pretty goofy on the Audis and other cars that I've seen with them. However, an aero-package with a GT3-style wing offers two uprights, so you get additional poseur points as well as satellite radio!

I asked a dealer in CA about satellite radio this weekend. He *said* that it is a hot topic at the monthly meetings and thinks it is on the way for the 997. He also said his sources told him that they have solved the external shark-fin problem with an antenna installation inside the front bonnet near the battery location. (??) The other staff there seemed to respect his ability to keep his ear to the ground. We'll see...

Someone should investigate installing the satellite antennas in the external mirror housing. I know that those things are fairly hollow, and there are already holes for the wiring. It would seem to be a natural place for such things.

How is it integrated into the system on the Cayenne? Does it appear as a source just like the CD changer and display station, song info, etc. on the screen? If so, at least we know that they have already created the interface to the head unit. Assuming the Cayenne uses MOST, solving the antenna problem seems minor in comparison.

Couldn't you mount a thru-the-glass antenna at the inside top of the back window and thread the antenna cable under the headliner and around the sunroof? Has anyone tried this? Also, plz tell me more about the antenna location near the battery and where did you mount the head unit? TIA.

I have XM in my 996 with the antenna installed under the dash just like the Porsche GPS antenna. Works just fine and is completely invisible and easy to install. Let me know if you want pics.
