997 vs 997S?
Has anyone tried both the models?
I would like to know the difference in power and acceleration thrill?
Also the differece in ride comfort betwinn 18"/19" wheels?
Is the S worth the extra money?
Thanks¨

for the extra 10, you get PASM standard, bi xenons standard, 19's standard, larger brakes, and the motor.... IMHO, the motor itself is worth it. ride comfort is not compromised much at all with the 19's. the acceleration is a good bit better, as is the sound...

You can buy the PSAM, bi-xenon headlights and 19" wheels and still be 6000$ cheaper with the 997. Is the engine in the 997 S that much more exiting?
Anyone tried them both?

for me, ill give up the extra 5k and take the S all day long. Do you think the S will fetch 5k more in resale in 1 year, 3 years? I think so. That 5k gets you 30hp and 25tq, and turbo brakes.... x51 alone used to cost 14k.

Saw them today- all of the dealers got a black/black S with ceramics and lots of other extras. Does look good with the yellow calipers. The std wheels on the regular Carrera looked pretty plain and small in comparison. The instruments look good, more like the older 911's compared to the 996. How will you ever lower the S though with its active suspension? Can't figure out how people are going to mod that???

Lowering with PASM...Not going to happen, its too engineered..
Removing PASM forget it the electronics are way too much part of the car
(5 software modules)
Lane-change module:
Vertical-control module:
Lateral-acceleration module:
Brake module:
Load-change module:
and errors will be a flying

When you look at the performance #'s difference between the 997S & 997, 0-62 MPH 0.2 sec. faster, 0-100 MPH 0.3 sec. faster, overall top speed 5 MPH faster, it is NOT worth the extra $10k they are asking if all that matters is the engine.

Let's not forget the potential first year teething problems with the new engine and PASM both of which the base Carrera will not face.
Personally, it is not worth the $10k additional for me simply cause I do not want 19' wheels, don't want PASM (at least not in the first year) and although the extra 30 HP is always welcome, if it was all about HP, I would save $30k and get the C6 with the Z51 performance handling package which will out perform both the 997 and 997S.
Saw the 997 and 997S today and I must say there is not a line on this car that I don't like. Very well done. Either way, owning this car would be a real treat!

The S is a bargain. You also get white-faced dash which I really like.
I, too, saw the cars in person finally and am very thankful that the front doesn't look New-Beetleish the way some pics suggested. The entire car looks very balanced, very sexy. It looks the way the 996 should have looked to begin with, and the doors close with a thud!! The interior is worlds above the 996.

I didn't drive the 997 Carrera and I can only compare my 997S to my 996, and only after 110 miles of driving. But so far all I can say is that I love the power and torque curve of the S and I absolutely think its worth it, plus everything else that makes this car drive like a dream - major advancements!

Remember that one: these ''major advancements'' are adding almost nothing in terms of performance. and Two: most of these modifications are untested and prone to failure. the 997 is an updated that is sure to have less problems than the technology laden 997s. Not only that, but the potential for modifications to the S is non existent. PASM alone is unmodifyable, and by itself certainly not track suitable.

Burning Brakes
"Not track suitable"....i guess Walter Roehl doing 8'02" at the Ring in a PASM equipped 997S is an irrelevance then...
or dropping that figure to 7'59" with the -20mm/LSD combination when he was not even trying....

A better comparison would be the 996 C4S and 997S, as they are similar in price, body style, and both have wider tires and Turbo brakes (both are also available as 2005 models); the AWD in the C4S and PASM of the 997S improving the standard Carrera's handling in very different ways. But the lighter weight and higher horsepower of the 997S will make it faster in a straight line.
Very little on the 997 is a clean-sheet design. It's all subtle improvements over the 996, so I doubt there will be new reliability issues. We'll have to wait and see about existing RMS and high-G oiling problems.
