997.2 clutch replacement
Hello all,
I just bought a 2009 997.2 with 75,000 miles on it. Not great records. How do you know when to replace the clutch? I hear Porsches give you almost no warnings.

My understanding is they get harder to push as they get older. My brother was having some issues, brought it to the shop and because shop owner knew what it should feel like told him it was bad. When he got the car back he felt the difference. The owner usually doesn't notice it because it is gradual. Pretty sure it was around 75k that he did it on the 09. But this car was driven into NYC a lot, so it had a lot of stop and go driving.

Here were my symptoms and cost. I believe the S cars have a different clutch in that it is always self adjusting as the parts wear. Maybe the .2 base has the same self-adjustting system... I am not sure. The self adjusting system means that the engagement point does not change with wear so there is no warning... when it fails, you get the classic failed clutch symptoms.

When you replace the clutch you should also replace the Flywheel and the Rear Main Seal
Rennpart.com is a great source for OEM parts and thay usually will include fast shipping. I have purchased 2 997 clutch kits/flywheels from them over the years
Lightweight Flywheel - $799
Oem Sachs Clutch kit - $699
Rear Main Seal - $35
Labor should be about $1500-1700 at Porsche Specialist Indy shop----> So approx $3100-$3300

Just another data point... but my 09 C4S clutch had to be replaced at 72k. Symptoms were slipping... but it was when I was purchasing the car. PPI found the issue and the dealership fixed it. $3-4k seemed to be the cost from an Indy if I was going to do it myself.

Just got my 2011 a few weeks ago, 58k miles and carfax showed clutch was replaced by dealer at like 22k miles which I thought was odd but whatever.
Anyways, this clutch pedal is pretty damn stiff in my opinion having driven and owned quite a few manual cars in my day. First thing I read when researching said clutch is probably going bad.
Would be pretty sad if it needed another one after 36k miles but... one owner car before me, but maybe he abused it I don't know.
I've put a few hundred miles on it already and have just chalked it up to a stiff pedal for now, not sweating it. We'll see.

The clutch is self adjusting and my clutch pedal didn't get stiffer or softer at all. Gradually slipping over 40 miles and I could barely drive it to the indy for the appointment but I did make it. replaced at 51k, 2400 parts and labor KMW Boca raton. Guys a god send. He told me rarely is a fly wheel shot up until the the third clutch if it wasn't abused.

Clutch wear depends largely on the type of driving (city\highway), not to mention how the clutch was used (user). If you slip the clutch quite a bit(e.g., downshifting coming coming to a stop all of the time; lots of stop and go traffic), your clutch will wear out faster. I've driven a manual for 45+ years and had clutches last well over 130k miles.
I know my clutch is worn when slipping starts to occur.

Water pump
Thermostat
Accessory belt
All three belt pulleys
AOS
Heat exchanger o-rings
Starter rebuilt
Alternator rebuilt
Spark plugs
Ignition coils
All filters
Borescope engine (bad news found leading to engine rebuitd shortly after that)
and in your case, I would add clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, slave cylinder and Rear Main Seal.
