I have been thinking about this and although the difference at say 100 degrees might be as much as 35% if you put that in context of the warm up cycle it's small. I know the graph and relationship will not be linear but I think adding a little more viscosity and shear when hot does seem like a good idea. There are no issues of malfunction of variorum systems until hot are there ?

I also run Mobil One 5W50 on my 997.1 GT3 since all of the previous 5W40 Liguid Molly and Motul had an issue with viscosity.

I found a few graphs on line, obviously viscosity is non linear but these are a good visual description the second looking more closely at the higher temperatures near operating

Looking at quite a number of graphs I think the difference in viscosity of the oil between an XW40 and an XW50 is around 10-15 degrees celsius of oil temperature. Meaning I suspect a 0W40 at 90 degrees C would be the same thickness as a 5W50 at nearer 100-105 degrees C

Allow me to add some scientific data, when using Mobil 1 on my 997.2 Turbo on cold starts I got a tiny bit of blue smoke switched to Liquid Moly and I get no smoke at all therefore using this scientific approach I use LM because it makes me feel better!

That's about as scientific as it needs to be!

This made me laugh and I learnt something, what's not to like !

I switched from Mobil 1 0W40 to Driven DI40 5W40 with a bottle of Driven Injector Defender added to the fuel tank before the oil change and I can say there is a drastic reduction in soot. In fact, after a spirited 50 mile drive with PSE on, there was zero soot on the rear bumper whereas there would always be some soot prior to the oil change. 2010 Carrera S ~ 22k miles.
