Default Jiggle in the steering - where to start?

Hi All,

So I have a 2005 C2S with 100k miles on it. The car is pretty tight overall but occasionally I notice some jigglyness in the steering when driving over, say, a limestone road, pockmarked pavement or sometimes when braking from highway speeds (this one is intermittent). Being that the car is at 100k I'm guessing there could be an array of parts worn out. Should I start with tie rod ends or lower control arms (both the supporting arm and the main LCA)?

Asked another way, which is more likely to be worn? The LCA's or the tie rod ends?

I get some steering wheel jiggle as well on a rougher surface like LCR in the corners, I’m only at 50k miles.

I just chalked it up the lively steering of a 911, not a lot of weight on the front axle.

Nice AP1, I’ve flirted with the idea of buying another S2K.

OK - so maybe its just supposed to have a lot of feedback. We just rebuilt the suspension on my son’s 986. I’ll go drive it over some bad roads and see if it does the same. Maybe my car doesn’t need anything.

Yeah, I love the S2000. Its a 2001 that I bought CPO from Honda in 2003. Mine has some cool options - factory hardtop and the gp white with red interior. I added CR wheels as well. Its been a great little car. I was out blasting some roads in it last night - Mt. Bonnel, Spicewood Springs, 2222, etc. Never gets old!

I did a full replacement on my 06 C2S front suspension, with pictures of what I found.

My 05 Cayenne has the same issues.
i believe the rubber used back then was a terrible quality.

i replaced lower control arms….rubber bushing was loose.
thrust bar, not too bad, but it had wiggle
inner tie rods, both wiggled
outer tie rods, fine but replaced
upper strut mount, cracked on both sides
upper spring bushing, junk, fell apart when removed
new struts….not sure it was required.

i did a thread here, posted pics of what i found.

the complete package was ~2k
i did the work myself

its super tight and responsive now….awesome really

Thanks - I’ll look for your thread. We rebuilt the suspension on my son’s Boxster and it wasn’t too hard of a job. Do you remember what brand of parts you used - Meyle, HT, TRW, etc? Were you completely happy with them?

Another item not mentioned which is known to wear out is the Steering Rack.
These are notorious to wear after time on both 996 & 997.

i did also get my front wheels straightened
i also got an alignment at a dealer…because i wanted stock specs.

In hindsight, I don’t think I needed struts .

i for sure needed to replace the upper spring bushings.
also, inner tie rods, which are really hard to feel until you remove the boot and put your hand on the knuckle while you wiggle it…then you will know.

because the inners require a special tool, I bet they don’t get changed often enough.

My son and I just did the complete suspension on his 986 including the inner tie rods. O’Reilly let us borrow a special tie rod tool to remove them.

Did you lower your car to the ground before torqing the control arms? If so, how?

Lowered onto 6*6 wooden blocks

worked like a charm.

i have no idea how to get a torque wrench in there…but i tightened it plenty tight..
