Lifters tick, they don't knock. If adding SeaFoam to the oil, it should be used at a ratio of 1 ounce to each quart of crankcase capacity, so if the 997 takes 8 quarts of oil, 8 ounces of SeaFoam should be used, not the whole can, and it should only re run for 100-200 miles then the oil and filter changed.

I freed a stuck 928 Lifter using this technique.

Thanks for sharing more info about use of Seafoam. Regarding tick vs. knock, I understand the difference in semantics, however I'm not sure how to categorise the sound from both videos above?

The video in post 1 when I listen to it on my PC does not sound as bad as when I first listened to it on my phone - that might be a lifter tick. The SeaFoam trick might do something for this one.

The video in post 10 has a pronounced knock and if under warranty should be scoped before that warranty expires.

Thanks a bunch Pete. Hopefully good news for the OP, mine will be getting a bore scope very soon!

yes. It's also very good at lubricating the mechanical parts in old 911 and 928 CIS fuel systems that run a fuel distributor.

I have a few months left of extended warranty on the car, so I'm thinking about doing a bore scope in case it needs some major work.
My X51 was sounding the same, and did appear to come from the HPFP or a suspected sticking lifter. Ceratec added to my oil eliminated the sound. I agree with other posters, I have heard a lot of .2 DFI cars make similar noise, close to piston slap but more of a clack/tick, and mostly from the driver side. Those high pressure fuel pumps are loud and obnoxious sounding at times, more John Deere than racecar.

Dang, I don't wanna create worries but that doesn't sound normal to me, my .2 is 167k miles and even tho it is burning some oil, it doesn't sound anything like this

Agree with the bore scope. Maybe do an oil change and send out for analysis?

Seafoam is $8.48 for 16oz at Walmart - I use it for my boat outboard engine over past 2 years - It gets added to the Fuel

Let me reassure you, the worries have been created a while ago, when I heard this noise. I'll report back when I've had a chance to have a bore scoping done.

I have always heard light "ticking" sounds of about the same frequency from the top of my engine - not from the wheel well. I think that is fuel injectors. Am i correct or should I call my psychiatrist, start taking anxiety meds, drink more, sell my boat, raid my kid's college accounts, start some "Porsche's Suck" threads and prepare for an engine rebuild?

In all seriousness, don't these engines tick a little?
