A request to see if anyone else has any recommendations to keep the engine performing as well as it should be, I still wonder if it's as crisp and clean under throttle as it might be. Over the last 6m I have given a good refresh and have
I am thinking of adding an IPD Plenum and FVD Bombacker ECU tune in 2024 but wanted to make sure it's 100% before I start with the plenum/ ECU. It's more about throttle response and willingness to rev out that is of more interest than absolute power
Any thoughts appreciated
- New spark plugs
- New K&N filters
- Recent Oil service
- Miltek X-pipe to remove rear silencer
- I only run on 99 RON fuel and have recently moved to shell Super 99 for a while

If you add the IPD plenum, if you have the option to get the one with the GT3 throttle body, I recommend it. When I first had it with the IPD comp. plenum, the GT3 TB made it feel like I was in sport mode on my C2S. Now that I am used to it, it is close to perfect but still on the subtle side (e.g. I can roll in first and feather the throttle without the car feeling jumpy), which is more desirable to me. The only negative for me is that now the sport mode with the GT3 TB is almost too punchy for stop and go—especially in first. Other options would be to add sport mode if you do not have it, and/or a tune. The thing I have had issues with since like 1992 is when you mess with throttle response, there is a SUPER fine line between too jumpy for stop and go traffic and perfect vs. a little too mushy (e.g. you floor it and it almost has turbo lag or it feels like you are waking up a camry, lol).
IDK what other people will say but when I changed my plugs last service, it really made my car feel more sprightly. After driving the 3.6 back to back with the 3.8, I want to say that the 3.6 is a bit more punchy than the 3.8, which may just be my brain reacting to the tone of the engine but if your car feels laggy, I would also check the injectors besides the plugs. Are the plugs gapped right? do they have weird wear on them? does a fuel additive like liqui moly valve clean or something. Is your K&N filter too oily? ...and etc. All these things are cheap or free besides your labor.

I found that my idle and part-throttle cruise smoothed out noticeably after cleaning the throttle body and replacing the gasket between it and the plenum, might be a worthwhile next step.

Mr Leeked is correct... clean the throttle body with mass air cleaner spray, and clean the mass air sensor... remove the sensor, and spray the crap out of it and just shake it dry... resist the urge to touch the sexy bits. Open the throttle body butterfly, spray the crap out of it, and then wipe with a rag... you may need a screwdriver to push the rag in there and get the edges of the butterfly. You may try a strong concentration of techron or other injector cleaner for two-in-a-row tanksfull. Coil pack pretty much either work or they don't. I never found a performance improvement from spark plugs but I do change them per the manual at every 40K. Other than that, nothing else.
Oh, make sure you seat the hose on the throttle body all around or you will allow dirt to enter.
Peace

Bruce, just finished my 60k inspection on my 997.2 GTS and have cleaning the MAF as my next project. Thanks for the input on how to do it correctly.
Related question - Do you know if there's a programming or mechanical reason why a 997.2 would get less than 100% throttle? Is there something in the MAF that I need to check? I was going over OBDII data from my last track day session and noticed the throttle percentage maxed at 87.5 percent when I thought I was on full throttle after corner exits and on the long straights.

It won't hurt to clean the MAF, but I think pulling and cleaning the throttle body will do you more good and you can do them at the same time.
You might need to recalibrate your throttle body if you're not getting 100% opening with the pedal fully down.

Run an injector cleaner regularly and for the cost I would change all coil packs as a preventative measure, I got 6x OE Beru's for 220 EUR delivered and gives lot of piece of mind after they have been exposed to the elements for more than 12 years.. The ones on the 997.2 are way better than those used on the 997.1, but my Indy has seen them fail which in the worst case can leave you stranded or damage your cats.
Finally, my cars have always greatly benefitted from a good old blast on the Autobahn, going WOT where possible. Great fun and best cleaning agent for your engine
