Asking for a friend. His steering locks up occasionally, when put in reverse. Never when put in a forward gear. Anyone have an idea what's happening? Any help would be appreciated. Dealership has him on the hamster $$$ wheel.

Locks up or the wheels hop when backing up at full lock? How's the PS fluid level? Any leaks around the PS pump?

 

He hasn't experienced the problem going forward yet and only occasionally in reverse. He hasn't seen any signs of a leak. Nothing to point to the pump as it locks up solid. The dealership is suggesting a new steering column. I told him it's a serious safety issue that should be reported to the NTSB. Also bring PNA into the conversation.
