Default Retrofitting 991.1 multifunction steering wheel to 997.2 w/o factory MF

Hey all. I have a 997.2 GTS and recently tried to install a 991.1 multifunction steering wheel. My shop installed it but the buttons and controls don't work. The car was not originally optioned with a multi function wheel, so my shop advised me I need a multifunction module. Anyone know the part number for this or have any pointers? I'll call Suncoast and ask them if I strike out here but figured would ask around here first. Cheers

My new wheel with buttons that don't work:

A Friday morning update: Called Suncoast yesterday and asked what all i needed - they told me to go fly a kite. Apparently they couldn't advise at all because of liability reasons.

In any case I have 997-613-299-02 Electronic Control on order. I think thats all I need + some PIWIS coding.

I am only aware of the GPS Adapter units, I believe that’s only for 991.2+ wheels.

https://gpsadapter.us/products/stmv1-971

Thats the swap I did, but I deleted the MF.

I thought you could activate it with the right scan tool?

an update for posterity: I did end up needing the Electronic Control part above to enable the MF controls. MF controls only work with the stereo though and not the electronics on the instrument cluster

I also have the ZZ-2 CarPlay retro fit and the MF controls don't integrate with CarPlay which is a bummer. OH well

if the above is your NEW wheel not the old one - all you need to do is get a FOXWELL 530 and go into the

coding menu
- steering wheel module
- turn mutliFunction wheel to ON

you have a gts. it already has the .2 steering wheel module (ending in 289.01) - it will use the 991.1 steering wheels no problem as they are physically an identical wheel with a different part number.

only if you are using the 991.2 steering wheel (which you're not based on the photo) - then you have to get the GPS adapter ONTOP of the instructions i mentioned.

All you need to do is get the foxwell scan tool (durametric pro wont work) - your dealer with the PIWIS can do exactly what I said as well - will take 5 mins.

I plan on installing the same 991 MF wheels as the OP. My car is a 2009 997 turbo which should have the 997.2 upgrades. My factory wheel is the triangle one with multi function controls. Will the swap be plug n play or will I need a new control module or anything else to retain the multifunction controls?

How would one know if they have the 289.01 steering column module?

I have a 2010 c2s non MF wheel(came with the Bluetooth options)

I'm going to a 991.2 wheel w/MF (GPS adapter needed) but steering module is the question?

Thanks

you have a 2010 .2 car, hence you already have the 289.01 steering wheel module.

all you need is the gps (paul Li) adapter + the foxwell 530 coding instructions (durametric pro cant access this).

wont take more then 3-4 mins.

good luck.

Currently doing the swap from a 997.1 sport design to a 991.2 with MF and the hardest part by far is finding the 289.01 part... eBay is full of people asking for almost the price of it new, and breakers only seem to have the 291.02 part, which is the one I have and won't work.

I would love to do this mod! Is your 997.1 a manual or tiptronic? Mine is a tiptronic- with a sport design wheel. no multifunction. Not sure if it would be easier for me to swap? Meaning, I don't think I need the aftermarket GPS module as well...
I might just bite the bullet and buy the control module new. I spoke to someone at suncoast earlier today- at first he was being vague, like mentioned above-liability issues, but came around and stated for my car I would need the following:

- new steering wheel + airbag
-289.01 module
-foxwell coding for the paddles to work with the tiptronic transmission (?) but he wasn't 100% sure
and a lot of patience handling the clockspring LOL.

For those of you who have retrofit a 991.2 wheel ( @ATX_Native ) into your 997, anyone know if there's any difference in the MF v. Non-MF rear spoke covers? I asked in the 991 forum but haven't gotten a response yet. I have a non-MF 991.2 wheel that came with sport chrono, adding MF and removing sport chrono to fit my 997. I removed the sport chrono switch, replaced the front trim, and installed the MF buttons that I had sitting around. Unfortunately, now it seems that the rear trim doesn't fit over the MF buttons. I might be able to force it, but there's a fair bit of resistance and I'd hate to break these buttons or trim.

See photos for more detail.

So I think I finally got all the required parts to proceed with the steering wheel swap:

- Car: 2005 997.1 Carrera 2 manual with Sport Design steering wheel
- New steering wheel: Macan PDK with multifunction (non heated)
- Macan airbag
- Rear cover without holes for paddles
- Since it's a 997.1, I also bought the control module (part number 997.613.289.01). It's not new, it was removed from a car, so as far as I know it doesn't need coding.
- GPSAdapter STMV1
- Foxwell NT510 Elite

So please correct me if I'm wrong, but the install should go like this:

- Remove paddles from the steering wheel and install new back cover (I've read that some cables might need to be connected to ground if there are no paddles?)
- Connect the GPS Adapter
- Remove old steering wheel
- Remove old control module
- Install new control module
- Put new wheel in place, together with the airbag
- Connect Foxwell and perform the following operations:
  1. Manual Selection - 911(997)
  2. Programming - Steer Col. Switch Control Sytem
  3. Codings adaptations - Customer Specific Settings
  4. Multi-function or Sport/Launch display: Installed

Am I missing any steps? Should I be expecting the horn to go off non-stop until everything is configured? I've read some posts about it and I'm not sure if it was installation error (bad ground) or missing configuration.
