Default Help me find a new/used 3.8L Engine

My 2008 Porsche 911 had an catastrophic engine explosion. It was having a lot of low oil lights and my mechanic basically told me to drive it anyways. I was going up to Lake Cowichan at about 4000 rpm when it grenaded. I was looking at la dismantler as a potential supplier of a new engine. I was wondering if youare available could keep an eye out for salvage cars or engines/recommend any companies I should
contact.

I would buy a used engine from supplier on EBay/etc as long as the engine has a warranty of at least 90 days.
Many I have seen on EBay over past 2 years show the miles when removed from car and also many have been checked for Bore Scoring.
As an example there was a 3.8L for sale several months ago for $16K that had 67K miles and checked for Bore Scoring.
**I would think seriously about buying a 3.6L Base engine since they are much less prone to Bore Scoring.

Only reliable sellers will give you all the important info. Also I've found you can discuss and get discount or even a pass on having to supply your core as part of purchase.
Good luck!

I can’t help you on the engine front, but curious if you checked the engine oil level after the warning light came on. Did it flash low and you just ignored it cause of what your Indy said? Any reason that you didn’t find a local auto parts store or gas station on the way during your journey to just drop a quart of oil in? Wondering how low on oil you really were for that to happen as I think even if you are 2 qts down out of 9, and you didn’t drive that hard, you should still have been ok I would think.

My take is that the car had a d chunk issue for a while, if it was consuming oil for a bit OR it could have occurred just prior to failure - let's be honest M96/M97 self destructing is not anomaly but rather just a matter of time. 3.8 is prone not to just scoring but also to d-chunking more often than 3.6 and base 2.7/2.9 motors.

If the oil light just came on just recently and there was no puddles or major issues, you would be within 1-2L/quarts of being full - highly unlikely to cause this failure, unless the failure was in progress and caused by cylinder wall cracking off.

Lesson here I think is that never ignore your M96/97 engine no matter how trivial the issue.

My observations based on a few discussion at the shop and the forum:

D-Chunk Failure ~5% of early 996s
D-Chunk Failure -~1.5% of 997s

IMS Failure ~12% of 996.2
IMS Failure ~2.5% of 997.1
Bore scoring - M96/M97 - 60% will have scored bores (especially in cold climates/countries) - not failures but upon inspection

Hartech - good read :

I have very bad luck with used engines from ebay, especially random sellers or junk yard sellers. One 996 engine came with cyl 6 having no compression. A known rebuilder finally sold a good one. Another time an engine came with missing internal ramps that could only be seen after valve cover was removed. That engine did not last.

Buy from someone with a recommendation by a previous customer.

It's probably going to be more, but a fresh (newly rebuilt) RND engine using all LNE parts would be what I would be looking at. RND M96/M97 Engine Rebuilds for Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 Models (lnengineering.com)

what about a Florida flood car and swap over all the engine electronics from your current engine? Might be cheaper to buy the complete car as a flood. It will likely be several weeks until the flood cars start hitting the market as it takes time for insurance to settle.

Who the hell would leave a Mclaren out on the street with a category 4 hurricane approaching? Unless the owner wanted insurance replacement or insurance money rather than preserving/protecting that car.

I think I saw an article where that car actually was in a garage next to a Bentley and the whole garage got flooded and they were swept out of the garage…hence you see that car in the street.

Yep the video of it in the garage and eventually being pushed through the garage out into the street is disheartening

I'd be all over this 3.6L engine if I needed one - 48K miles & test video of it running.
Just ask for Bore Scope Inspection and make a deal - Offer $10K

That's a 2009 engine above, so it's a 9A1 and not going to work in a 2008 997.
