Default Door panel issue

I finally got around to chasing down a door rattle. Found the cause of the rattle very quickly. The material around a grommet has torn and the screw does not hold the panel securely and thus the rattle.

The material is somewhat like foam. Semi soft. I am looking for suggestions on how to reaffix the grommet into the material without pulling the door panel off. I need reinforce the material around the grommet somehow. TIA

Top of drivers side door.

The torn material

Flexible adhesive might work, but could be hard to apply with the door card still installed. I have been chasing a rattle as well recently, but mine is up by the window switches and so far I have been unable to identify and correct it.

J-B Weld for the win! I think this will work. 👍

Good luck with catching that gremlin.

Fill it in with silicone or urethane caulk

It may be a long shot that you have the same issue I had, but my car developed a buzzy rattle near the window switches last year during a 700 mile road trip. I partially "fixed" it by sticking a small piece of foam behind the interior door pull. When I got home I noticed a little trim cover about the size of a dime behind the door pull was loose and wouldn't fit tightly. So I removed it to see the screw behind it, which was secure and realized the trim piece itself was the source of the rattle. Left it off and fixed the issue.

The little cover behind my door pull feels pretty tight, but I will take it off and see if it makes a difference.

I see that that the perforations along the upper door edge has ripped. This seems to be happening to most of the 997.2's. This will cause the door tip to rise and can only be corrected from the inside the panel.

Good to know, thanks. On a positive note, the J-B Weld seems to be taking care of the door rattle so far.

This is what I meant that the tip of the door panel will pop up as the perforation detaches itself as time goes by. The perforation is there to help the airbag inside the door to pop out controllably in the event of an accident. The fix is to take the panel out, JB weld along the rip from inside of the panel.

I would suggest pulling the door panel and using fiberglass/sheet material & epoxy resin to cover that entire area where the upper and lower tabs are located. Giving strength to those areas and a better/more thorough job.

Has the inside panel (the upholstery) also "lifted" along the edge...(This is what is happening in the 2013 + cars...)

No luck I'm afraid, drove to and from work with the cover off and it didn't make a difference. My door handle does creak a bit when flexing it, but it doesn't sound like quite the same noise. For my next attempt I might leave all the plastic panel clips off and just install the card via the screws. That way I can more easily remove it again to investigate further, since the clips can be a pain to get released. I'd drive the car with the card removed to confirm it's the source of the noise, but I wonder if it would make the ECU mad with the door wiring disconnected.

Agree. Now that I understand what is going on.

10-4. Mine has started lifting but not to that extent yet.
