Default Potential First Porsche (997.2), but have some concerns...

I've found a really low mileage (under 20k) 997.2, a 2009 S, sport chrono, PDK, pasm etc. The price is pretty good (though not the deal of the century). My concern is that it's been up for sale for a LONG time (almost a year). In that time they've continuously lowered the price so my natural concern is - what am I missing? If it's such a good deal, why wasn't it snatched up already? What things should I be looking out for? Vehicle history looks clean. Pictures look good. I'm wondering if it's simply a case of they had it priced too high for a long time and now that they've lowered it, people are thinking like me that there must be some hidden problem with it and thus passing on it.

Thanks!

Engage seller and arrange a PPI.

I had to PPI two cars before I found mine, the third time was the charm.

Whats the asking price? Cab or Coupe?

Possible it’s an issue. A couple hundred bucks on a PPI will be worth it if you otherwise like it. But like all things, buyer psychology comes into play. The house I bought in fall 2020 sat for a bit in a HOT market. Nothing wrong with the house, but it was priced high and buyers see a house not selling in 3 days on the market and assume there are issues.

this is always an issue when someone lists a car way above market value because they either just spent a lot of money in maintenance, or they have a sentimental attachment to the car. Some people think that by asking over market value, they give a buyer negotiating room. Well that actually turns potential buyers away. Once they start to lower the price, that makes some buyers shy of that car(and the seller). I always list a car for what I think it will sell for. It always sells fast, and always at my asking price because someone sees how good of a deal it is.

Yeah, I'd thought about a PPI as well. Any advice on how to find somewhere near the seller to do that? It's about a 4 hour drive from me.

this definitely isn’t a deal. What did they start off asking? Contact a local to the seller independent Porsche repair shop and deal with them directly. All the seller would need to do is drop it off.

They started it at $90 about 100 days ago it looks like - not sure about before that.

car isn’t worth more than $65k, even at that price would be a hard sale

Yeah, $75k is silly money for a PDK, even with the miles.

$90k is absolutely silly and is laughable, so it make sense it didn’t sell.

I am not a huge fan of super low mile cars anyway, you’re paying a huge premium and the miles you add will depreciate the car more per mile than a car with reasonable miles.

These cars like to be driven.

Thanks guys for the feedback. Perhaps I'm just looking on the wrong places (Autotrader, CarGurus, etc)? I mean I suppose I could just make a lowball offer and see if they bite but that seems to be the average I'm seeing on those sites. Where else should I be searching?

I'm struggling to believe a 2009 S with PDK, even with low miles, would go for more than 60-65k. You *might* be able to get to 70k if it was a manual, but that's about it. Are they really listing that high on Autotrader?

Also are we talking USD?

Yup. And on CarGurus. This is a dealer listing (most are on those sites). Yes this is USD. Stuff I'm seeing at those price points have 60k+ miles at least.

Go to
https://bringatrailer.com/auctions/results/
you will see what similar cars are selling for (don't forget to add the 5% buyer fee to result prices)
I may be wrong but I don't believe low mileage very clean cars will sell for much under 70K (manual coupes will be harder to find and higher priced)

Those aren't all coupes and aren't all PDK of course as you can't filter much more than 997 and year on that site but it does appear via my "eyeball regression" that this verifies the "typical" price range around $60-$70k at auction for the last 12 months. When I dig into the lower ones they were higher mileage, base models etc - i.e. things that you'd expect to lower the price a bit. And if you add your 5%... I think it's definitely a seller's market right now, especially it seems for what I'm looking for, 997.2 2S coupe with PDK, sport chrono, pasm.
