Angry CA SMOG Failure to Communicate

New here and first time Porsche owner - 2005 C2S. I just got the car off the trailer and went to my local Smog center(s) only to not be able to complete a smog test. 3 locations with the same issue - they were able to successfully connect their OBDII code readers and everything looked right. When they tried connecting the Smog machine computer to the OBDII port they were unable to get a connection.

Previous owner says he never did any software changes. He lived in a location where they didn't require emissions tests.

Anyone have this issue? According to all of the techs all the other things they look for point to a test being successful - just no ability to connect teh smog computer!

Help!!!????!!!

I had a similar issue with my E39 in CA. Turns out one of the pins in the OBDII port was bad and it wasn't allowing full communication, so I could read some values but it wouldn't connect to the smog computers. Ended up rebuilding it and it worked after that.

Oh, wow that looks like a job! I'm wondering if you were able to connect an everyday engine reader at all? I'm able to get a decent and working connection with a regular card reader. Just the darned smog connector isn't working.

My next step is to pull the OBDII port down out of the dash and see if there might be a bad connection due to plastic interfering from getting an adequate m-f mating of the port and connector.

Thanks for your info!!!

Yeah I had no issues connecting with personal Bluetooth dongles (3 different ones in fact). The connector used by the smog techs must pick up a different pin and that happened to be the bad one on my port.

The problem is it's hard to tell which one is bad, which is why I just bit the bullet and did all of them. The car was on sale at the time so I had an extra sense of urgency to get it sorted.

Default Another failed communication

Stopped by another Smog center - another no communicate. Seems all of these tests indicate it should pass.

Any advice on how to pop the port out of the dash opening it is snapped into? Wrestled with it for an hour today.

Talking Finally PASSED!!

Turns out the fix was to manually force a perfect connection while teh machine did it's test. Likely the Pin issue @kiznarsh answered to.

After about 10 minutes of trying various positions to hold it in to, we finally got it. PHEW!!

Thanks everyone!

Glad you got the OB11 to connect.
One of the few positives in Communist Seattle is no more Emissions testing.

How did that come about? What's the reason to stop emissions checking in WA?

Probably determined to be Racist because of costs to get car to pass Emissions.
Just like the new law preventing the Police for stopping vehicles with expired license Tabs and not wearing bicycle helmets. Those are also deemed Racist.
Backward Seattle.
Good news is I look homeless so get treated like Royalty - More dirty and disgusting you look and smell the better these Libturds treat you.
