What’s your favorite characteristic of your 997
#18
If any of you owned these cars from the beginning of the design, you would greatly appreciate almost every aspect of the 997.
Yes the 356 looks beautiful, early 911's light/nimble and who can forget the smell of burnt oil even up to the 993 model.
However as a driver, the 997 has so much to offer.
-Manual Transmission is smooth shifting and solid.
-Great HP
-Suspension makes it a great driver in curves
-Braking on S models fantastic
-Creature comforts so much nicer than the old days---> Heat and A/C that work great, powerful fan for defroster, seats comfy which all make it a pleasure to drive on extended trips in all sorts of climates.

I've been shopping for an SC for a few months now. Truthfully I've wanted an air-cooled 911 for many years but lately I've been searching for one born the same year as me (1980). The truth I keep coming back to when faced with my limited parking/storage space is this: my 997 is better in every single way.
The 997 really is the perfect recipe of modern and classic elements but it still has it's soul, it still has the DNA that connects it to all the oil drips of the past.

Groov makes a great point.

After driving it a while I realized how spoiled I was from 997 ownership. Just couldn't do the 911sc anymore and sold it. I also have very limied garage space unfortunately.
And 1959 is the year I was born and I restored my 1959 Super Sunroof long time ago - I love stuff thats 1959. so I can certainly understand the connection

1 to 4 are essentially the DNA of the 997 - it's a package and I love each one at different times. The look - seeing it in the car park. Turns - feeling that certainty in the curve. Acceleration - it's not the fastest but it's quick and a great sensation when you hit that torque curve. Engine - I get a buzz every time I press the Sport button and hear the tone of the exhaust change.
I would give up 5, but it's also what makes the car great. We can work on these cars - owners choice of whether they do or not, but it's very doable.

I truly appreciate how it feels in a turn. Lateral G's are much more enjoyable than deceleration and (maybe, but close) acceleration forces.
That said, my GTS' acceleration, even with 408 hp, is a bit disappointing compared to almost any e-car, modern Mustang or Camaro.
(But I do grin ear-to-ear every time I run in 3rd gear, at WOT, from 4500 rpm to the 7500 red line....and the car drags the horizon onto my forehead.)
The great thing about a 911 is the attributes #1 through #4 are pretty much givens.
If #5 means DIY maintenance, that is the one I can live without, or appreciate least.
If "tinkering" includes modding the car with respect, subtlety and improved performance...#5 is a keeper.

For me, you missed one very crucial attribute - the way it sling-shots out of turns - you can get on the power early and the rear just digs in, resulting in that delicious feeling of a decent amount of torque contained by those massive rear tyres with the weight of the engine just grinding them into the tarmac, maximum forward thrust with virtually zero shift sidewards - even a GTR can’t do that!
Of course I LOVE the looks/dimensions, it’s just sooooo 911, in a way that my 991 just isn’t.
My 997.1 is fundamentally flawed (M97 motor), but I absolutely will not part with it.

I would add driving position to the list. I had supple leather seats in my first 997, an -06 C4S. Wasn't crazy about that slippery feel of the supple leather but just loved the way you can configure the seating position in the 997 compared to what I had driven in the past. And don't get me started on the GT2 buckets I've had in the next two 997's which takes this feel to another level. It's like strapping the car onto your body rather than just sitting down in it and fasten the seat belt.
