Default Best Sounding Exhaust

New to the Porsche family. What would be your recommendation for exhaust on a 2009 4S? I am still learning why so many mufflers. I am use to two.... Just trying to get better sound and free up some horsepower. What is the best sounding exhaust and what mods would you make? Thanks.

I don't understand why you don't just devote time to searching the site in order to narrow down your options - and then present that to the group to comment on. You did the same thing with the thread on an '09 being particularly unreliable.

Just do your research.

Ironman88, I didn't know that this was your forum and you were the moderator to make judgment on others. Just asking a simple question and new to the 997 community. I was in the middle of a deal to buy a 997.2 and googled information on the car and any known problems and the article came up. I understand the internet can give false information but wanted to be sure and I know people on the forum know these cars. Most are very helpful unlike you. If you don't like the post, move along. No reason to make these comments. And yes, next time I will try to remember to use the search engine before asking a question. Again, just move along sir....

One of the most subjective options so you'll probably get about as many opinions as you get replies. For what it's worth, to me the OEM Porsche PSE combined with the Sharkwerks bypass pipes beats anything else I've heard but that's my ears listening. Other's ears may be hearing something completely different.

One thing I think most agree on though is that the center muffler on the 997.2 has to go. If you just tinker with or replace the side mufflers I think chances are you'll be disappointed.

Thank you sandwedge for a productive response. I do appreciate your help, as I am a newbie, and will look into that modification. Unfortunately my car does not have the PSE option so that is why I am going to want to change the mufflers. The 2009 stock exhaust is too quiet for me. By the way, beautiful car that you have there....

My arrived at exhaust combo is (997.2 C2S manual):
Fabspeed 200 cell headers. Expensive, shiny, cool, the secret to sonorous success.
Standard centre muffler. Not the devil everyone else says it is.
Standard PSE side cans 2nd hand from a wreck, with hillbilly remote control. I designed & implemented the control.
991.1 PSE tips, made 'em fit. Done.
TopGear centre muffler delete x pipe. In combination with PSE and 200 cell cats. Hideous, drove around with PSE valve permanently closed. (now relegated to the shed).

Have fun on your own journey, everyone's tastes are different, embrace.

I’m running stock exhaust with the Topgear center muffler defeat. Not a huge sound difference, but I love the growl when accelerating.

FWIW on the gundo/fister
With out PSE I would look into the Fister or Gundo 'hacks/mods' https://fdmotorsports.net/shop/ols/categories/9972 They both basically bypass a section of the side muffler can and act as an always on PSE. They modify your existing side muffler cans. This combined with some kind of center muffler delete (sharkwerks or what have you) seems to be a good amount of noise most people like.

Gundo is the EU version of the Fister mod.

Mine is very similar; TopGear center delete, TopGear valved mufflers, Topspeed 200 cell cats, in that order. The cats make the biggest difference and it is now finally loud enough that I sometimes close the muffler valves which I basically never did when it was just the mufflers and center delete. If I had to do it all over again I would just do the valved mufflers and cats. But as they say, opinions are like ***holes and exhausts are the same...one person's bliss is another's nightmare.

I have an AWE exhaust paired with AWE HFC and love the setup. I am a 997.1 though so might be a bit different for you….

If you want racecar sound then a full header back iPE setup. Mind you I'm heavily biased.
