Default ignition key switch intermittent

2006 997.1 74000 miles.
When I insert the key to start the car the first thing that happens is I hear the door locks energize. Only after that occurs will the car start when I turn the key. If it fails to start I have to turn the key all the way to the left return it to center and remove it. Only then can I try to start it again. Occasionally, maybe 10--15% of the time nothing happens when inserting the key.. Eventually, after several tries the engine will start and all is well. This happens with both my keys in either position. My questions are: 1- Is that starting sequence normal? 2- If I have to replace the switch will I also have to replace the keys? Thanks in advance for any input.

The electrical part of the switch that seems to be giving you trouble is different from the mechanical part of the switch that reads the key groove and chip, so your keys should be fine. Yiur doors loving when you insert the key is odd though. Removing and having to reinsert the key after a failed start attempt is normal though.

This happened to me. It's the ignition switch. Change that and it should be fine. My dealer did it and it wasn't very expensive. As I recall, they keyed the existing keys to the switch.

Same here. But it is easy to replace yourself.

Happened to me, replace the ignition switch or if you're tight on money you can take it apart and clean the contacts and put some new dialectic grease on them. I bought a new one but refurbished my original for ***** and giggles.

I stand corrected.....the doors are not.t locking.. I jumped to that conclusion because I had a car that did lock the doors when car was started. Also, there is an option to program doors to lock when the ignition is turned on. , What I was hearing was some other relays energizing..
