Motor Mount upgrade?

Motor mounts connect the engine to the chassis. They support the weight of the engine at the rear (far right and left rear corners of the engine bay). They are metal housings with rubber internals used to provide vibration damping and isolation of noise, harshness, and engine vibration from traveling to the cabin. Over time the rubber internals stretch due to the weight of the engine, and the engine ends up moving around more than it did when new.

Are they typically based on age or mileage?
Mine is a bit of a unique situation. I have a 997.1 ‘08 (so 13 years old) but less than 15k miles on it; so, I’m curious if the mounts can be worn just based on age (I.e. the rubber getting brittle)?

The 911 engine mounts are unique in that the engine actually hangs from them instead of resting on them, so they tend to stretch from the load even if the car isn't being driven; probably not as much as when it is being driven because of the extra forces, but some nonetheless.

I found the motor mounts in my car to be poorly designed. While they may be great for limiting the amount of noise and vibration transmitted to the chassis... and then to the cabin... they allow the engine to flop around way to much. For example, take a turn hard while moving quickly and accelerate... if the road surface is not smooth, the car will hop around... awful. This is why folks use aftermarket mounts to plant the car. Even Porsche recognized they had an issue so in later years, you could purchase active mounts that stiffened when you applied gas or other conditions were met.

This sounds vaguely familiar, but wasn’t it only for 991 and later Turbo cars? I’m looking into possibly replacing mine as well, though I’m in a similar position and the thread starter…11 year old car with 21k miles. I don’t want any of that solid or semi-solid replacement business that introduces more NVH into the cabin though. Want to keep the driving experience more on the tame side. I have another car to satisfy my grown up go kart itch.

I just ordered a set of RSS mounts for mine. My mounts are only 3 years old but reading all the positive things about the RSS I felt it was time to change. Unfortunately they are backordered at RSS.

IMO engine mounts are age based, and probably all 997.1 owners should replace them if still on original mounts. As others said, the rubber stretches over time. You can verify by checking if the exhaust tips are sagging about an inch or more.

I am going to go with a 964 KIT on my 997.2 ! Will let you know on the results shortly. Whole kit was around $200, went with Uro mounts and OEM hardware.

Changing motor mounts on a 997 is probably one of easiest DIY jobs you can do. I’ve changed motor mounts on lots of vehicles and these are by far the easiest. I highly recommend doing them yourself. A floor jack and basic hand tools is all that is required.

Every time I open the engine lid, that driver's side mount looks so proper. I love the finish and it looks so much better then the plain n bulky OEM ones. I just installed mine a couple of months ago and when I called RSS, he finished a batch. Bummer, I hope they are not on backorder for long.
