Default $500 oil change…?

Good morning, friends. Trying to benchmark service costs.. Took my 997 Carrera S Cab to dealer for routine oil and filter change. I provided the oil, used brand recommended by LN Engineering. My bill was $306, including an hours labor @$249 and a $49 filter. Advisor indicated that the cost would have been $500 had they provided the oil.

Is this typical?

thank you

My dealer charges about $350 total for an oil/filter change.

That's definitely high but not unheard of. This is why many of us do our own oil changes

I bring oil to my indy and its about $125-150 for labor and filter. He also takes a good look under the car when its up on the lift which is a nice little plus.

Based on their published labor rate and filter price, it sounds right. However, the labor rate is outlandish and $49 for a filter is robbery. So yeah, you got taken. I always ask for cost before any service.

What part of the country are you in that they charge $249 for an hours labor? I’ve seen $125-$150 as more typical at indie’s recently

$250 labor hourly rate is what dealers in the San Francisco Bay Area charge. Mercedes, Lexus, Porsche, Toyota, VW ....

I'm not familiar with your situation which may not allow for a DIY oil change but it's quite a simple process. A case of oil, filter and an oil analysis kit totaled me a bit over $200 and I'd say it's an hour long job without rushing. It's quite easy to do and an hour worth of labor would be a reasonable charge to me.

I was thinking of making a Chicago trip. If you wanna pay me $500 I'll change your oil for you

A 997 has to be the simplest oil change ever. Extendable oil filler receptacle thingy, filter up top, drain plug easily accessible .....

Maybe I should just post $100 oil change on FB and see how many local Porsche people show up. I do have a lift.

$249 an hour !!!!! Damn it better come with major perks. Even at $249/hr + parts at full retail it should not be more then $400.... Even Audi R8 V10+ GT costs only $350 for oil change with a sump system which requires draining.

I thought our TO/GTA Porsche dealer at $179 + tax (13%) which is $203 - I always that that was outlandish given the fact most of the fleet is just a glorified VW / Audi product. Audi and VW locally are $140-160/hr while independents are $90-130.

I recommend a local shop if in GTA EuroTek (in north Oshawa) - 1/3 the price of dealer!

Remember back when they were only $230

First DIY cost me $200 including oil, filter, plug, washers, oil filter socket, torque wrench, plug socket, drain pan, and ramps. And about 2 hours. It was the first time I'd changed the oil on any car... Next DIY will cost under $100 and take an hour. I say this only to reinforce that it's easy, and much more cost effective. Draining for an hour in my garage costs $0 vs. $249 for an hour on the dealer lift.

My local indie Porsche shop south of Boston is now ~$315 for LOF on both my Cayman and 911.
Used to be $225 not too long ago.

I can get a 997.2 oil change done in 35 minutes, all in at my house. No jacking required, just drive the car up on a set of planks to give it a hair more clearance in the back. There has never been an easier oil change.

I bet people can't even get to the dealer and back in 35 minutes, not to mention the several hundred dollar bill thereafter.

Sounds like pure theft - ya'll getting hosed.

Stealers in my area offer a summer special for 450 on 997/996s regularly 550

Now, you do get free coffee and to flirt with the super hot parts receptionist while you wait, at least at Beverly Hills Porsche!

Thanks to you all for your feedback. I’ll never go back to the dealer. I’m 71 years old, not likely I’ll be crawling around on my back underneath the car, but at same time, I just hate to be taken advantage of
