Default Square Tire setup idea

I'm tinkering with an idea of a custom project that would allow me to run staggered offsets with an identical wheel width all around. Think like 18x9 all around on a base carrera.

I'm not looking for opinions here on the idea - but more input from those that heavily track / drive their cars hard about the ramifications of running say, a sticky square 255 width setup on a 911?

I know e46 M3 guys often do this to attempt to keep tire wear uniform and swap tires, but if it could be done on a 997 - what are the issues from a handling / drivability perspective?

Do NOT do it! I do not have to explain the specific driving dynamics of an all-in-the-rear design like the 997, which as an owner you must be familiar with.

You mean the BMWs with near perfect 50/50 weight distribution?

You think you are smarter than every factory and privateer team that has raced a 911 in the last 45 years?

You need the bigger rear tires to handle the power delivery and to keep the weight of the rear engine in check dieing cornering. A square seuo is going to make for an extremely unstable and tail-happy 911 as you'll have way more front grip than rear grip so the front will be super planted and the rear swinging around behind it all the time.... or at least once as you back into the wall or guardrail.

The wheel gets a 2.5 inch spacer built into the back of the hub?

How does that help traction and the contact patch reduction?

I'm guessing that this is a custom 3 piece setup where rears would have deeper lips and skinnier barrels to land at 18X9. To cosmos' point, if there was any benefit here, racers would have been doing this all along. This setup is likely only slightly terrifying with 2200lbs and 87hp, no way I would run it at 997 power levels and weight. The square setup makes sense when you have equalish weight on the front wheels. Acura started the square setup in LMP, and had to make significant effort to shift weight forward in mid engine car to make it work. No way to pull that off with your engine hanging over the rear tires.

All this being said, there is a whole "stance" culture that does things that makes cars handle worse for perceived improvement in looks. You could always do it, but I would never want to come close to pushing the limits of the car with that setup.

Wouldn’t square tires cause a really rough ride? Asking for a friend.

Depends on your use case...maybe he has a private track with unique paving?
