Amazing that Porsche doesn't correct /address this common problem on $100K plus cars. I had the issue and replaced on my 2005, yet the problem still exists 10-15 years later on late model 991's, sheesh. Probably on 992s down the road as well.

I would not call this a problem.... these are wear items... heck I got 11+ years and a 186K miles on mine. And given my photography hobby, I am in and out of that trunk a ton!!!! I guess they could use a spring instead of a cylinder of compressed gas, but one is clunky and the other more elegant and refined.

I don’t think this is a Porsche problem. They don’t make the part, and how long do you expect it to last? They lasted 15 years in my Boxster’s frunk before they got weak and still fine in my 07 997. Wear items. Just replace em.
I don't buy it guys, its BS. It goes into a Porsche, its their problem-get a new supplier. My car has 42k miles on it and I don't use the frunk often so how does it "wear out" -maybe from time the hydro fluid goes bad i guess. But what about newer 991s who are having the same problem. Cheap fix, think it cost me about a hundo or so installed after I got tired of getting whacked in the head.
And what about the crappy interior finishes scratching and peeling, etc. Never had these issues on any other car. But I still love driving it and looking at it, lets just face it, we are suckers for these cars and Porsche knows it.
Just a caution from (almost) experience: If you are used to your worn-out struts (i.e., have lived with them for a while), BE CAREFUL opening the front lid for a while. It will come up much faster than you are used to and may whack you on the underside of the chin.
Same blue bag but, no.... mine was Stabilus SG302063 however it was blacked out with Sharpie scratches.... The parts were the absolute exact same as what I removed... length etc.
That SG number is a Sachs number for BMW.. really odd. Some websites say Sachs and Stabilis are the same..... I dunno....I am going to remove that part number from my post as I am not sure what the heck it was doing on my package. I suspect it is the same part but for different markets.
I got wacked in the head way too many times..... I am surprised I survived childhood. My hood was coming down at the slightest of breezes.... whack!!! ..... ENOUGH!
I got the exact replacement without the Porsche label from Amazon for $45 for the pair: "Stabilus 987 997 Hood Strut Front Left and Right (set of 2) OEM"
To remove the old: Slip a tiny, thin screwdriver blade under the retaining clip and twist it out... the strut will pop off the ball.
Clean the *****.. not too much you may get caught... and I put a super tiny touch of grease on them.
To install the new: Just press it on, it will snap on... no need to dick with the clips. Stupid easy.... and yes, I jabbed my finger with the screwdriver and did cuss.
The old, Porsche part (with the P logo) actually had the maker's name on the cylinder: Stabilus. Pic of old and new below (don't Google the odd part number on the Porsche tube as it will bring up all kinds of makers).
Wow, I forgot how significant the struts are to holding up the hood. I should have done this years ago.
Peace

Thanks guys! Glad I found this thread. My front trunk struts have been slowly letting my trunk fall down. I originally ordered them from Amazon it came out to $49.26 shipped and going to return them at UPS after finding them on Rock Auto for $26.79 shipped.
The strong-arm ones from Auto Zone are actually a little stronger than the OEM versions. I upgrzddf to those when I added a Das Schild hod protector because of the extra weight it adds to the hood. They also have a lifetime guarantee and lift the hood slightly higher.
I just tried the Strong Arm on my 997.1 (Turbo, but don't know if it matters) and it's about a half inch too long. It could be my hood doesn't open as wide as OPs.

It will fit, just flex the hood up a bit further. That may be why they hold the hood up better and higher than the OEM ones because they don't necessarily hit the end stop inside the shock on the opening stroke.
Thank you for responding so quickly. How much force did you use to push the hood up? Did you have both struts removed before installing the new ones?
I'd like to use these because I also have the hood liner protector, which adds to the weight.

Yes, get a helper so you can remove both and not have to battle the weight of the hood while trying to pop the ends on.. Havibg one of the old ones on the other side will limit how high you can lift it.
