this.

That price range is a nice .1 and some cash to sort it out.

Also in one of the above posts someone insinuated that driving a .2 was somehow an improvement over a .1. They is just a bunch of rubbish. There is well documented risk with the .1 with IMS and bore score but I feel in my opinion it’s totally overblown. Of course unless you Csr detonates. Then, not so much.

With this budget a nice 997.1 Carrera S/4s 06-08. None of these cars suffer from IMS issues, and assuming decent miles, say 35-60k should hopefully not have bore scoring either. 997.2 is a little better in some aspects but the 997.1 drives the same imho.

I think a 997.2 would be a great choice, if anything for the lack of the IMS issue. If the 996 is your jam (and I'm biased as an owner) I think the 40yr anniversary cars shouldn't be overlooked. If you can find a clean well cared for example that is bore scoring free that would be a great choice. X51 power pack, LSD, full leather interior and a manual - what's not to like!?

Everyone of course has their own perspective when it comes to aesthetics - but to me, the interior of the 996 was never a good design, and over time aged even worse. For that reason I think the 996 is a low point for Porsche. I could never own one for that reason.

When I first started shopping for a water cooled 911 to use as a daily driver, I was not really sure what I wanted because there are so many good options. I had FWD and AWD before, so I wanted RWD mainly but I ended up driving a bunch of 996-991. I had a similar budget and I found a car that ticked all the boxes for me after having looked at everything from base 996 to 991 GT3. I ended up in a 15k mile 997.1 C2S, which I really love. I do think if I hadn't driven so many different 911s, I wouldn't be so sure of my choice but I recommend driving one every chance you get. I looked for a long time to the point where I could rule out a car in minutes. By the time my car popped up, I really knew what I wanted and it was an easy decision.

That's a very fair point and to an extent I do agree with you. I never was a fan of the design and never thought I'd own one but a full leather interior does help a bit and I've noticed that the design doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would have. FWIW I kind of prefer the door cards on the 996 to a 997, but like you said much of that is personal preference. I know people feel very strongly about the air cooled cars but outside of the classic gauge cluster I find the rest of the interior very meh but I doubt people buy those cars for their interior.

"Brake actuated limited slip differential" that's hysterical. It's called stock PSM and is not a limited slip differential at all. It puts the brakes on on the spinning wheel that has less resistance so the wheel that actually has more resistance gets power, but it's not a limited slip differential.

If you go $50-$55k you can get yourself a nice 996TT. This is what I did, and what I would recommend to you.

I wound up with a very nice 997.1 S manual for $45k earlier this year. The car is in excellent condition and is a hoot to drive. Cobalt Blue (which I searched for), PCCB, factory short shift, sport chrono, and a few other gubbins. 46k miles on the odo and lots of good times ahead.

The price difference of a 997.2 was just too much of a stretch for me (or, really, for convincing my wife) and I prefer the looks of the .1 and really enjoy its grumbly character.

My point—There's nothing wrong with a really nice .1, especially the later cars (2007, 2008) with the bigger IMS bearing and the newer steering wheel.

At any rate, drive a lot of cars so you know what you REALLY want—good luck!!

A very nice 997.2 just sold today on PCARMarket at auction for $41k. Someone got lucky. Seems like a great deal. I wasn't ready to pull the the trigger today and not 100% sure I want a PDK. But a very nice car for sure.

That price is a few thousand to the good for a base, PDK car.

As someone else questioned, (but the post is no longer here), I'm not sure that engine sounds completely healthy. The fast light ticking is the normal DFI injectors, but there's also another rattly noise I can hear in the background as well. Hope it's nothing and things work out for the new owner, as that's a good price on a .2.

That sounds like as base as base comes. A little concerning that Car Fax doesn't show a single service update? Even with CPO, that isn't a slam-dunk, though it does provide quite a bit of short-term peace of mind.

I traded in a beautiful 2007 997.1 C4 6 mt Arctic Silver Cab w 45.5k miles to CarMax in Buford, Ga. The salesman was Rick Bell. Given it's age they may wholesale the car but it's worth a call. It has no issues and looks new other than the a/c control ***** need to be replaced due to the paint wearing off. A common problem that can be resolved. I would have kept the car but Carmax had a GTS I really wanted.
