It does get pricey...but totally worth it. Do the bumperette delete at the same time. The 997.2 lights look so amazing when illuminated. Much more modern. I was kind of on the fence at first, but after the conversion I would definitely do again.
You could sell your .1 and take the money you were going to spend on the upgrade and buy a .2 almost.
IMHO the only way this should be contemplated is if you had an accident or if you already rebuilt your motor and have a load of cash you want to light on fire. This is a 4K cosmetic upgrade that only the guy behind you notices.
sorry, your right. The spread on .1 can run from low 30s to 40s. .2 is mid 40s to 50s. My point was to do this right could almost get a high end .1 into .2 price range.
yes, agreed...to do it right, you spend a lot of money for sure...that youll never ever get back
Best case scenario...you find a .2 bumper used in the same colour as OPs car for cheap ($500) and then buy a used module ($250) and brand new trim and tail lights ($1300.) Then you are in for about $2k and labor is not much if you dont need to paint. Sell your other stuff off for $1k and you are out $1000 when all is done.
New taillights make a big difference in how the car looks, over 12 year old pitted/faded. So I highly recommend spending the extra and buying a new set if you do it.
If you can get the bumper and module used at a decent price, then you will do OK financially, if you ever want to sell
Not worth it IMO unless doing a color change or accident repair. Just buy led offerings for the .1 bumper as there are now a few different styles to choose from. Also, the .2 lights are crazy expensive and also seem to have moisture intrusion issues that the OEM .1 lights don't or the led .1 replacements (at least the Depo / Dectane ones I use on both my cars). When my brother bought his .2 cab, they replaced both his rear lights under warranty due to moisture in them at something like $800/light.
my front AND rear oem conversion with bumpers, lights rear module, coding, paint, install and even PPF on the new front end, was 2500 usd after selling most of the factory parts.
there are mint used oem parts out there, bumpers need to be repainted (new or used) and in some cases if there is very minor damage it gets refreshed during the paint process. headlamps, led fogs (if minor scratches) can be restored back to new (one of my fogs was majorly pitted) and reSealed as a part of the process as well.
the 997.2 was out since mid 2008 so there has been about 12.5 years of used parts on the market. there are also numerous well documented threads on various forums including rennlist re the process/parts needed for carrera/carreraWB, and turbo rear end conversions. this isn't any different then prev 996.1->996.2 conversions and there are already a few documented 991.1->991.2 conversions already as well.
the 997.2 rear does look better then the 997.1... just like how porsche also did a great job improving the rear (esp lights) on the 991.2 vs the 991.1. With that said i did have the 997.1 depo lights, they just didnt look right so I sold them.
MacDuc - do you have a narrow or wide body?

Embrace your incandescent heritage and cast off the sinful diode desire...
I went through the same dark path, also starting with thoughts of a .2 conversion, then backed down to Depo LEDs, then finally acceptance and body positivity.
Thanks guys for all the replies. A silly question in hindsight after seeing a .1 and a .2 from the rear in the post above. I had always thought the lens were the same shape - clearly not.
I will look into some Depo / Decane LED’s (Can someone post what these look like).
Money is always an object but this is a hobby, and hobby’s cost money so I say spend away and enjoy.
