Default I didn't know that ALL our cars have "foldable" external mirrors!!

I read in a British sister site that on our cars you can manually fold/tuck the outside rear view mirrors. Although many members might already know this I thought that I'd share for those that don't.

In order fold, just gently push the mirror housing towards the back of the car and you'll see a red spring loaded tab that you move towards you and that will act as a lever to keep the mirror in a folded position. This works for both mirrors and I'm enclosing pictures to attest.

Hope some will find this information useful.

Yes, I think I accidentally found this out when washing my car one day, on a previous 997.2 I had. It's convenient for storage if parking in a tight space.

Funny fact: On my first Porsche it took me well over 3 months to realize the same thing.

Even folded, they hardly make the car any narrower, so I've known about this, but think there's some risk in breaking the 15 year old spring when flexing it, so never fold mine in.

News to me! It’s probably more like a impact feature in case the mirror is hit so it doesn’t break off (hopefully) rather than using it for folding.

there are 11 replies to this post and not one wise guy comment. So I will sacrifice myself and be that one.
We know who doesn't read the owners manual. Page 28
I just had to do this, Cheers!

there’s a way to lock it. So it’s for something other than just to absorb a hit which it does without locking.

almost all cars decent have collapsible mirrors, so you wont get torn off if you bump something

Trucker who delivered my car pointed them out, and specifically to show me how to unlock the tab to put them back out. Said he delivered a 911 once and before he could stop the guy he’d folded one, then jerked the mirror hard to pull it back out and broke the tab.
