Default contemplating 997 turbo, any years better than others

I got rid of my 997.1 base, love the look of that car. Never had a turbo but contemplating getting one. PDK vs Manual? Any years better than others? Anything to look for on a turbo motor/car?

09 has mezger with newer interior, so most people who want a manual consider that the holy grail. But you have coolant lines and cam spinning issues. mostly no big deal for a street car.

07-09 are mechanically the same though.

10+ is the new motor which has proven to be just fine. PDK vs. manual is a personal choice. the automatic works well with the forced induction motor, but I couldn't go that route.

They are all very very good cars, so beyond the normal used car (and used porsche 911) stuff, not much to worry about.

Quadcammer's right on all counts. I'll just add that .2 manuals are pretty hard to find and quite a bit more expensive than .1 manuals, so you have to be willing to pay a premium if you want that combination. (A particularly nice one just went for $120k on BAT the other day.) PDKs are much more common on the .2s so it's kind of the "default" pick on those.

Manual coupes hold their value better than Cabs or Triptronic/PDK trans
Coolant pipes can leak or fail as they were glued from factory....pinning them or welding them eliminates a potential problem (but it will cost to drop the engine)....otherwise they are fairly bullet-proof (last of the Mezger engines)....and OH The Torque! Great drivable super car.....going to grocery store it can drive like a camrey, but when you put your foot down-----------!!!!!!!

I see you went from a manual Turbo to your current C4S, care to share why? I'm curious personally but maybe OP could use the perspective of someone who went the other way. I just switched from a 2009 Carrera S to a 2009 Turbo, both 6spd Cabs.

Don't get excited when you see the prices on '09 automatic Turbos. They're Tiptronics, so they're a lot cheaper than other 997.2 Turbo cars.. Turbos didn't go to PDK until a year later.

Good luck with your search, BTW. I absolutely love my base '09 C2, but a Turbo is about the only car that might tempt me to sell my car for.

Why I went from 07 manual Turbo Coupe (8600 miles) to 2011 C4S? Logic....Turbo was mostly garage Queen (although the most car for the money in the Modern world of Porsches)...I thought since I was not driving it enough, I would sell, pay down a big chunk of my mortgage (which I did)and go back to naturally aspirated for less money but still fun. I am now driving the car a bit more and what is not to like from either car (the exhaust sounds better on my C4S), but in reality it cannot compete with the power/torque of a 997 Turbo.

.1 is the Mezger engine, .2 is DFI engine. Personally I loved the idea of having a piece of history; the last Mezger engine to ever be produced. While the .2 makes more power stock for stock; with a Tune and some standard bolt ons (like exhaust, etc) you can easily get the power up on the .1. Coolant lines will be an issue if you plan on tracking, you're not allowed on the track with out proof they have been addressed (pinned or welded). Yes its an engine out service, but I look at it this way: dropping the engine to pin the coolant lines is just an oppertunity to also pop bigger turbos in there 😄. You may also want to post this over in the Turbo specific forum for additiional opinons.

Well, you're off the hook after all...
Listed as a manual, but it's a Tiptronic...

I hate when they state manual and then boom, tip or pdk. Its a bit more than I want to spend (80k max). Very low miles drives price up, but I would prefer a partially seasoned model in the 40-60k range.

Do the .1 and.2 mt turbos have the same transmission? I know the .1 has a Gettrag but can't find what the .2 has? Anyone?
I had a 2006 C2S for 4 years. The cabin upgrades in the 2009 turbo are significant so I would check out a 2009 if you are looking at .1 .

I did this.....chased a 2010 Turbo for 4 years, kept it for 6 mos, fantastic car but far to fast for where I live. Had kept my 2S luckily and am content with it.
