Default 997.2 GTS vs 991.2 Base

Looking at a 997.2 GTS PD as a DD. Only have test driven a 997.1 base years ago, owned a 991.2 Base PDK.

Not able to see the 997.2 GTS currently due to outbreak, wondering for those that have owned both will the 997.2 GTS handle as well as the 991.2?

I realize without the turbo the 997.2 GTS will likely feel sluggish down low to me, but I am mainly concern with feel and handling.

I also recall much better steering feel in the 997.1 I drove, but have heard from others that there is not much steering feel difference now between a 997.2 and 991.2. Your comments would be apprec.

I've owned a 991.1 and I've owned 3 997s. My current main car is a 997.2 GTS coupe manual. The 991.2 will be the technically superior car in terms of handling and performance and the PDK is better than in the 997.2. The 997.2 gts has better steering feel, but not by a lot, and, arguably, sound. natural aspiration vs turbo character, loves to be reved out.

For me, hands-down prefer the 997 to the 991. This is because, though technically inferior, the experience it gives me in terms of feel, feedback, and character is what I enjoy in the driving experience. Both cars are amazing for their own reasons. I can't imagine you would dislike either, they are just different.

I would guess that both of those cars are better than most drivers, and you won't be unhappy in either one.

Overall, 991.2 would be a better car, specially electronically... BUT 997.2 GTS is more rare, more unique, more visceral, better feel, more fun, MUCH MUCH better engine and exhaust note, and to me even better looking. Totally depends on what you're looking after. I personally find the 991.2 engine sound so lacking that completely negates it as an option. But if you're OK with it, it has more tech and feature comforts than 997.

The 991.2 is in a completely different realm performance and handling wise. That said, I dropped back from a 991.2 Turbo Cab to a 997.2 GTS Cab and was completely happy with the 997.2 GTS Cab. The 997.2 GTS has plenty for public streets, looks better and is a joy to drive.

As a daily driver, cruiser, comfortable mode of transport: 991.2 is superior.

997 GTS while great will feel very dated but visceral and raw. 3.8 vs 3.0T feels bit like a dog compared to high torque down low in 3.0T - it needs revs to truly enjoy it.

My vote would be 991.2 as a daily, as weekend only affair GTS is more special.

I've driven many 997's along with a 991.1 C2S and 991.2 GT3. I would take the 997.2 GTS over a 991.1 base. I do prefer the smaller size and more special feel that the 997's give so as long as you're using it for a weekend car and backroad car I would say 997.2 GTS. If you were wanting to use it as a daily driver, then 991.2 C2 all day.

Also, 991.2 C2 is going to handle better and accelerate better. But the feel of the GTS is what is better.

I daily drive my GTS. Perfect for it. Very comfy, but I do have comfort seats and pdk with both seat warmer and cooling.

997.2 GTS for all the reasons already given. 991 looks and feels large. The old hydraulically assisted steering of the 997. 2 is also better, especially in the RWD models like the GTS, a bit less noticeable if shopping for AWD models.

That was one of my biggest thoughts that the steering, which is huge for me, would be much improved over my previous 991.2. However surprised to read some mention there was not much difference between the 997 and 991.2 steering.

Also wonder if I would think the 997.2 GTS is as sporty as my 991.2 was. The 991.2 is pretty planted, very quick, but is almost too good that it becomes boring at times. You lose the raw and it does start to feel like a larger sedan at times. But my concern is the 997.2 GTS would not compete sport wise with my 991.2.

I also drove my 991.2 all year, whereas this 997.2 GTS would be parked in winter. Not sure losing that extra drive time is going to be ok with me. 1st world problems to figure out haha!

WHAT does "not compete sport wise" mean? If you mean FEELING sporty, it sure feels sporty and probably more than 991, due to more exhaust and engine noise plus no turbos... if you mean FAST, and having TORQUE down low to instantly move the car without gear change, then 991.2 with Turbo would be faster. Essentially for 997, you have to be at higher RPM to feel the power, for 991.2, mid-RPM has most power.

No, I meant suspension wise. I realize the 991.2 feels much faster off the line.

My assumption is the 991.2 base will have a superior suspension to the 997.2 GTS, but again that is only from what I have read. My only drive time in a 997 was a 997.1 base. Perhaps the 997.2 GTS suspension (non SPASM) is not drastically different than a 991.2 Base.

Why not just go drive one. I'm not sure where you live but there are quite a few for sale and seem to be evenly distributed around the country.

Edit: the Cargurus search link isn't working here so I deleted.

I don't think anyone can convince you one way or another, its so subjective. I wouldn't base any assumption on a GTS ride quality on driving a 1st generation 997 some years ago. It's really quite marvelous and there's a reason they're so desirable

I'm glad this was said.
