Default Oil quantity warning message

Just bought a 2009 911S. Driving after 30 minutes the oil quantity message came on. Checked oil and and quantity was full. Book says message may mean over service of oil.
I have all records and oil was serviced by Porsche dealer less than 50 miles ago. Person I bought car from did not drive the car after service as he was selling car. I had a PPI. I wonder if the message did not come on for him since the car did not get to operating temperature until I drove the car. Also according to owner’s manual the oil quantity message and low oil light are 2 separate sensors.

What is the exact warning message the you are seeing?

Is the segment indicator flashing (uppermost segment flashing)?

Check to make sure they reset the service time/mileage indicator.

Over full can cause a message. Oil expands with heat ... More than you might expect. So what's OK cold may change when warm.

The 9A1 motor is difficult to remove a small amount of oil from. I would recommend draining, measuring, and refilling with a quart less. Then add a bit at a time (over the course of a few days if necessary) until you have one or two bars lit on the gauge. IMHO you never want to see the top bar lit.

Agree. Middle of the gauge to me is always where I try to keep it. That way I have a bit of room in each direction.

As far as the message, I would need to know exactly what it said.

You could try and remove a bit from the oil filter housing.

Default Message out

Started car and ran it for 5 minutes. No oil message. Tried to check oil level but computer said car was not warm enough. Pretty sure that is was slightly over serviced and expansion causes message

drain out a couple of cups and see how it responds
Any dealer should be able to provide help and its not a bad thing to make friends with dealers

Can't really do this on a .2 like you can on a .1 because the filter housing is inverted and all the oil drains back out.

Wayne's suggestion is the best. Go get a new perfectly clean bucket from Harbor Freight or Home Depot. Drain all the oil into the bucket, then refill with a quart less. Adjust as necessary.

Overfull in either generation car can damage the AOS and foul the spark plugs.

2009 C2S 162K miles

I never got that message so I would take it very seriously.

As OKB noted, drain the oil and refill. Follow the manual and put back what you are supposed to. Then heat it up and remeasure. If you don't have the tools/jugs to remeasure, take 1 to 1.5 quarts out of the bucket, then refill. If you don't know what oil they used, you may want to just fill it with real Porsche-approved oil... Porsche denotes approved oil as A40 and it will be denoted on the oil bottle.

You may be able to drain just one quart by loosening the drain plug until it jiggles, then jiggle it to get some sort of flow... but I suspect by the time you got the plug to jiggle, it will pop out anyways and you will have a flood. You will need a large, low-profile drain pan... and need to jack up the driver's rear to get under there, or hang the car's butt off of an edge.

As others have noted, don't use that indy... he/she was clueless. While servicing this car is not all that complicated, all they have to do is read the manual, I would go to someone who services Porsches... there are plenty out there. Your typical Porsche indy knows we owners are a neurotic mess and will tolerate endless stupid questions and silly demands.

Peace
