“I'm at 7 years on 1 Optima that's in my 997 and 6 years on the other 997 one. Both stay on Battery Tenders when not in use.
The one I changed in my 914 recently was 12 years old. The one I changed in my DD gmc sierra that never gets separately charged was 7 years old. The one in my 928 is 5 years old”

OK, super newb situation. My battery straight up died, and I discovered this AFTER I inserted my key. (So the key remains locked into the ignition, though no power is present.)
Purchased an XS AGM replacement today and during install had an issue. Positive terminal was attached first, but as soon as the negative was connected, the car freaked out. Steady horn and wiper and headlight washers just started spraying non-stop. I disconnected until know what I've done wrong.
Your help is sincerely appreciated.

Thanks, Pete. During the cacophony of sound, I tried using the fob and turning/removing it, but no joy the first time around. When I dry off from washer fluid I'll give it another go.

Resolved. Thanks for the guidance. I fiddled with key position, all compartments closed, etc. and, ultimately, the Third Time truly was the charm.

My battery is on it's final cranking leg. It was a Bosch blue S6 and saw a thread that Audi and VW also use the same battery. Has anybody gone with the VW battery?
