Default Pan cover Threading Self destruct

Did a oil change this week and noticed a chuck of the pan cover treading missing. Filter did show up some small aluminum treading pieces and also in the old oil. I could not believe what I saw. Has anyone seen or heard of this happening? Here’s a photo.

so I called a couple of Porsche dealerships on a replacement pan cover. They all recommend the original pan cover/ plastic baffles. Even though I don’t track the car and no plans on doing so, should I go ahead with OEM X51 sumo kit? Been reading lots on this and seems to be mixed feelings if not tracking don’t bother with X51..

thanks

You may find it is designed in this way to ensure the oil resting at the very bottom of the oil pan drains away. The seal is created by the aluminium crush washer below.

Huh, I've never looked that closely at mine but that does not look like a defect. It looks like the threads have a nice radius where they terminate on both side of the gap.

You are fine. It is designed this way. My Mantis deep sump has the same feature. Porsche owners are always trying to overthink simple things.

I was as alarmed as you were when I first saw this on my car, but indeed you can find images on the web showing brand new pans having this cut out for oil flow. Phew!

Thank you too all on the quick responses... One of the other members here posted a good picture on the actual original pan cover. I do feel a lot more comfortable about this now but the little few aluminum shavings I found on this last oil change is a little concerning.

Is it normal for once in a blue moon for small amount of aluminum shavings to show up?

great appreciated

There is always a bit of metal left in the galleys after machining the block. This will appear at the filter in bursts occasionally. These should be small in size. A picture of your cut apart filter would help. An oil analysis would also be good.

Filter Had very little in it and smaller in size compared to the ones I fished out from the old oil in oil tub. Theses were the bigger pieces which washed out from the drain plug.

Looks like aluminum. Not magnetic. Not bearing material. Or other concerning parts. Screen would have prevented pick up by the pump. May have been in there for a very long time. Most likely nothing to worry about.

Non ferrous material...not uncommon to find some minor shedding from the block casting.
Oil n drive.
