I did replace the battery earlier but swapped again just now. Seems to behave the same way, the occasional miss, having to reinsert the key a couple of times.
Maybe it's the electronics inside the key?
there is a very small transponder inside the key that I have actually dug out to swap keys. It’s non-powered. I am not sure how it could go bad.

Use you other key for while to see if if it behaves differently.
So the OP sent me his module and I took it apart, couple picks to hold open all the plastic tabs and then the case opens. 4 more picks to take out the lower case and you 4 tabs that hold the board down (be very gentle with these). You can then clean the board which in this case was very dirty. Apply a little new dielectric grease.
pop it all back together and you should be good to go!
i am going to test the one I just refurbished tonight an follow up. Do not stick your key in it unplugged as the unlocking mechanism doesn’t work without power and your key will get stuck if you turn it.
