Slim chance of that happening though if the 991 and 992 sales figures met/meet their goals.
Based on so many of the reviews, adding the NA 6 cylinder to the Cayman GT4 / GTS 's mid engine design has created something extraordinary, and smaller and more nimble than the 911 is likely to ever see again. I love the styling of the 911 (nearly every generation), but other than the back "seats", you would really have to be stubborn not to test drive the Cayman at this point: far cheaper, smaller, fast enough for most, more balanced. At least that's what those who have driven it have said. I have no reason to doubt it. Stylistically, the Cayman doesn't do it for me, but the 911 is now so iconic it won't be knocked off the style pedestal by another Porsche.

I have to agree. Of the new Porsches, the GT4 seems to be the drivers car. The initial fear of the Cayman taking the 911s spot seems to have disappeared as the 911 become bigger and bigger. I think Porsche found the best place in the market by making a "gt" 911 and carting to the enthusiast with the GT4. Unfortunately the GT4 is a design miss for me as well with the boy racer side scoops. I cannot get the image of a 2000 era mustang out of my head.

The answer for me as always been the same. Enjoy my 997 for as long as possible with a pipe dream of a 4.0 build in the future.

There were complaints when the 996 came out that it looked like a big Boxster and didn't have enough visually to differentiate it. Porsche seems to be heading in the same direction, as the the 992 looks like a small Panamera (bulbous back end). The 911 is losing some of its unique appeal. There's still plenty under the skin that makes it special but the exterior needs to reflect that.
