Thanks for all the feedback, you got me thinking....

So I figured maybe that works:
If you don't have Sport or Sport Plus mode on, you get a less "loud" display
Only when you active Sport or Sport Plus, you get the bars (see below).
Waddya think?

Hey this is a great project. Today we can make stuff that enthusiasts could never dream about the time this car was produced.
Since the clock is gone, why not use the clock signals to send commands to the device? The ON, start and reset commands surely can be used to cycle modes for example.
Having conditions about SPORT mode is a great idea. I’m thinking a digital analog clock there, then a simple digital clock, then these temperatures, then maybe a shift light (say which gear you’re in if possible and then make the background green yelllow red based on rpm). Just some ideas.
One thing about connecting to can bus in this way. The point of a can bus gateway is to reduce the possibility of devices to interfere/damage the critical operation of the car, right? If you take the condom off and mess up with the codes, I am thinking maybe you could set incompatible engine parameters or illegal values for other equipment that is not accounted for in the code.
The best way would be to reprogram the gateway to send the correct signals through the sports chrono cable, no idea whether that is in any way possible. I guess when you sue this piwis that’s what it does to code in/out equipment.

Great idea, let me see if I can make this work.

I don't think that there's any danger to mess with the signals on the CAN bus. This is for two reasons
a) I only LISTEN on the CAN bus, I am not writing anything on the bus. I had planned a little routine which would switch Sport mode automatically on/off when the car goes over/under a certain speed (and the RPM are low and the oil temp is high enough). But then I decided not to do that for that specific reason: I want to stay in passive mode.
b) another concern could be that adding extra wires to the CAN bus will affect the signal quality and lead to errors, also not likely. If you look at the how the CAN bus was designed, you can see that someone who understands wiring in cars (with all its challenges) designed it so that it's almost immune to that (as long as you terminate the end of the wires properly).

This round instrument packs a lot of data into a similar space. Might be some styling ideas for you.

Man, you'll get into an accident before you read any of those numbers off of that Garmin's gauge hahaha.... starting to get way off hand here...

This is an awesome project, really like the idea of using the chrono clock for something more usable...my needles are broken so I plan to "fix" this at some point. However, upgrading to a screen with better functionality sounds even better.

I would buy the analog clock all day long with white background. My 2015 Cayman has the SC but it functioned like a clock when the car was running. The 997 sits there like a dead weight.

Bravo! Great project. Short of removing my 997 wart, I would like to get real info from it. On my 987 I converted to a real oil pressure gauge. Put me in line for your “DIY. parts kit - version 2.0”

Oh yes and since it's a high-res color display I also added a Porsche splash screen, because why not?
very impressed with your projects!

where did you source that screen?

Wonder if there is a way to tap into one of the other buttons/dials to cycle different displays? Other useful ones would be pdk gear selection (perhaps with a backlit shift light?), boost level.
