Default 997.2 - Debris in Oil Filter

Hello everyone,

I would like to shortly introduce myself: I am proud owner of a 997.2 GTS (Coupé, manual) since about 5 years. Everything has been great so far. The car just reached 29,000 miles.

I recently did an oil change myself after just 1,400 miles and 1 year from the last oil change.

For the first time I opened up my filter and noticed some metal flakes. They are mostly non-magnetic except for maybe 1 or 2 tiny bits that are magnetic.

I know there are quite a few oil filter debris threads, sorry for opening another one!

First of all: is that kind of debris normal after just 1,400 miles?

Second: if it is normal, where does the debris come from? Is it the piston pin or even the thread of the drain plug or washer?

Best regards and thanks!

"1 year from the last oil change" divided by 1,400 miles = 116 mile per month?

Unfortunately, that is true. It is sitting more than being driven..

2010 C4S PDK with 134K miles ...

Looks normal. I've gotten a bit sometimes over my last 20 oil changes. Nothing to worry about IMHO.

Thank you for your answers so far. That definitely calms me down. The remaining question is, where could that debris come from? Is it from the cylinder walls or is it the thread of the drain plug or something completely different..

That amount is normal. On your next change send an oil sample to Blackstone or Speed Diagnostics. This will show you parts per million of all metals and you can see if aluminum is high or not.

Yeah, stop worrying and drive the car.... Haven't driven mine much lately, so can't throw the first stone, but drive it more and stop looking/investigating for problems.

Thanks guys! Then it's decided. I will stop worrying and just enjoy the car. The engine runs perfectly smooth anyway and is an absolute blast to drive..

I will still post pictures of the next filter change if that is of any interest.
