Of course you are only removing the airbag. Before you replace the airbag, make sure the metal rod that holds the airbag is sitting flush in the tabs pictured at the red arrow.
However, after you replace the airbag if you notice that it doesn't fit flush to the wheel (the airbag goes in a 1/16"-1/8" to deep) the reason is probably because the wire that holds the airbag in has come out of holding tabs, see red arrow in pic. The tabs are on the underside of the plastic holder right where the red arrow is. There is another tab on the opposite side. As pictured - I used a shorty screwdriver and twisted it until I could see the metal rod was seated back in the tabs. Afterwards, the airbag fit flush like it should.

Anytime you work with an airbag, it's good practice to disconnect the battery even if the system isn't energized at the time. You could create a short to the trigger wire from a system that is energized and have a problem. Also, you don't need to wait 20 minutes after disconnecting it, just tap the brake pedal a few times and it will deplete any residual current in the electrical system.
DON'T LATCH THE FRUNK WHEN YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.

yes - if your steering wheel has been modified or reWrapped - MAKE SURE the spring loaded clip is connected INSIDE the steering wheel trim. many times the lower clips aren't connected properly spring loaded metal bar and will cause an install problem. This can ONLY be done when the spring loaded metal piece is installed on the trim plate BEFORE the trim plate is mounted to the wheel.
otherwise the airbag will stick out when mounted in. look up the issue on the other steering wheel threads - as its a problem that plague many owners here and they couldn't figure it out.
