Yes they do. Just read an article (forgot where) that suggested Americans are fleeced of huge amounts of money each year by online and phone scammers who are getting more and more sophisticated with their methods. Selling cars they don't have, getting access to people's credit cards, bank accounts, ATM cards and more. If people applied a minimum of critical thinking like you did, these scammers would have to find a different way of making a living. Without exception there's always a giveaway (typically cleverly subtle but still obvious) that the person you're talking to is not legitimate.
