Default Which Oil for Short Trips?

A bunch of oil questions:

Background: I mostly take short trips so I plan to change my oil every 2500-3000 miles.

1) Currently have Motul 5W 8100 in there. Is SPEEDiagnostix the company that Jake Raby and all the smart guys use? This will be my first time sending in oil, any tips?

2) A really smart guy told me to switch to DT-40. But I was looking at the price, pretty expensive. Since I'm changing my oil every 2500 miles I'd like to use something less expensive. Another smart guy, who's not a fan of DT40, told me to go with Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W40 and add MoS2 anti friction. Is this a situation where saving $50 isn't worth it, and I should just spend more money and get the DT40?

3) If I go with DT40 should I do the Driven flush for 100 miles?

4) Since I'm changing the oil frequently, is there a cheaper oil filter I can go with?

PS - I'm not asking which oil is better, I'm asking which I should choose for short trips Sorry in advance for any controversy!!

What is your definition of "short trips?" If those are trips where your oil doesn't get to 200, and your water temp to 170, then the oil doesn't matter, IMO.

This makes me nervous... I take short trips as well, are oil changes every 3k miles advisable? (997.2 if it matters)

I guess I don't understand why choosing one very good oil over another due to "short" drives makes any difference. The result of short drives, implying the oil isn't up to temp, will basically have more oil dilution from water and likely pickup more contaminants bc they won't be "burned off". Any oil that meets Porsche specs would work. Given the limited number of hrs or miles you're going to use the car and frequency of change, dilution would be my only consideration if driving under 50 MI avg per startup. So going to a higher cold rated weight oil, ie 5w40 vs 0w40 would make sense.

As far as filters go, you can buy Mann filters for under $10 each, so are you trying to save $5 on a filter while using the best oil possible.....doesn't seem wise?

Some will say change your 996/997 oil every six months or 3k miles.I think that is over kill for our street cars.

Test your oil and that will tell you alot. I use black stone each change.

My 996 AE car gets 1k miles per year. Always a hot drive or three, no short trips.

I change with Factory fill once a year. Mobil One, 0W40 Euro formula of course.

Drive it like you stole is the best way to burn off that excess gas and water in fuel.

Just use a Porsche A40 oil and you will be fine ....Keeping the oil clean is much more important than brand ... Liqui , Motul , Syntec are all good ... You are not tracking and either of the thee will work nicely for daily driving.

You're going to give yourself Paralysis By Analysis. My Rx: Change your twice a year using an A40 approved oil and a Mahle or Mann filter. Collect oil sample at time of change. I use AMSOIL 5W-40 European Car Formula and Mahle filters, oil sampling with Oil Analyzers kits. I'm driving my car about 5k miles a year.
If money's an issue, consider using FCP Euro's Lifetime Warranty on your supplies, but keep in mind that you have to send the used oil and filters back to them. Who wants to do that? Not me.

Short trips - don't think it matters much. The oil is going to get condensation contamination and you'll see that frothy foam under your oil cap - that's the water and oil mix getting whipped up. Can't remember if yiu have a .1 or a .2 but if a .1 and a bunch of really short trips you're probably going to see fuel contamination in the oil as well from the initial start up enrichment mode while it heats up the cats. You need to drive the car longer on the weekends or when you can to burn off the accumulated water and fuel, as neither makes a very good lubricant and those being int he oil will also give you a false oil level reading (will read higher than actual then the water evaporates out). Best thing you can do if this is the use case is the more frequent oil change, like you're planning.

Yes. BR30. For best, and quickest, results. Reduces cross pollenation of the additive packages.

... or BR40 depending on the climate where you are when you do the flush, but it really doesn't matter that much whether you use the BR30 or the BR40 for the short time it will be in the motor.

Any reasonable oil choice will suffice for your usage plans. I would put 5-40 Mobil 1 in and call it a day.

If you are concerned about driving too many short distance trips, open the oil refiller neck every now and then; if the engine does not come up to temp you will find
awful looking green slime/sludge directly under the cap. My car had that when I got it from the dealer. This is no cause for alarm and you don't need to clean it.

One longer drive getting everything nice and hot will clean it up by itself and your car will be thankful to you. Enjoy!
