Default Oil Pressure Values - Points of reference

2009 C2S 145K miles

Another Rennlister contacted me and asked me what my oil pressure values were.... So I wrote them down.... FWIW... feel free to post and maybe we will have a little database going here. Value? I dunno....

Oil 5W-40 Motul 8100 X-cess w/ LiquiMoly MoS2 additive, full oil temp approx 200F, all approximate holding throttle steady in 6th gear:
  • Idle = 1.5 bar
  • 50 mph = 2.2 bar
  • 60 mph = 2.2 bar
  • 70 mph = 2.4 bar
  • 80 mph = 2.6 bar (@ approx 3,100 RPM)
  • 90 mph = 2.6 bar
  • 100 mph = 3.0 bar
Accelerating hard in 4th gear, hitting 100 mph the pressure pegged at 5 bar. It would hit 5 bar under higher RPMs and hard acceleration.

Peace

Thanks Bruce,
My car 2009 C4S with 35K miles.
Same oil, same additive - 5W-40 Motul 8100 X-cess w/ LiquiMoly MoS2 additive, full oil temp approx 200F, all approximate holding throttle steady in 6th gear:
I had virtually the same reading.

Idle = 1.7 bar
60 mph = 2.2 bar
70 mph = 2.4 bar
80 mph = 2.6 bar
90 mph = 2.6 bar
100 mph = 3.0 bar
Accelerating hard in 4th gear, hitting 100 mph - 4.5 bar. I did not see my gauge pegged at any time.

Thanks

Worth pointing out here that .2 cars have a different setup (electronic demand oil pump or something like that) than .1 cars and will see very different pressures. My understanding is that based on engine load, rpm, throttle position etc the DME adjusts oil pressure, whereas .1 cars, oil pressure will be determined based on temp/viscosity (ie even at idle when cold the pressure gauge will be pegged), rpm. In my 2010, my readings are very similar to yours Bruce - if at any time I open the throttle more however the system anticipates a demand for higher pressure and the needle shoots up. I'm sure someone with more knowledge of the two systems can chime in.

From page 21 of 2009 Technik Introduction, part number PNA 911 021 09:

"Demand-controlled oil pump
In order to reduce drive losses from auxiliary units and improve the efficiency of the engine, while at the same time reducing fuel consumption, the new 911 Carrera models are fitted with an electronic demand-controlled oil pump.
With this new oil pump, the delivery pressure and volume is controlled for the entire engine map. In other words: the required oil pressure and a defined oil volume is set for each engine operating state (e.g., different engine speed and load). The oil pump is integrated neatly in the oil pan area and is driven directly by the crankshaft via a chain."

In my car using AMSOIL 5W-40 the oil pressure is consistently between 2.5 to 3 bar. I've never seen it go above 3.

I think RPM based date would be more helpful than speed based values. But, perhaps this weekend I'll add some data with DT-40.

Yes, the speed of the car is irrelevant. Engine speed is what matters.
