Golf R ownership?
Do any of you have a Golf R? Have a 718 Boxster and considering a 997 C4. But I’ve been now considering a newer Golf R instead for a winter vehicle. Used ‘16 or ‘17 at $25-$28k or new at $39k.
Like the VW 6yr bumper to bumper warranty on 2018 and newer.
Any input from Golf R owners that have 997 please chime in.

Golfs are very different cars (FWD) vs 997s even a 4WD 997, but great cars nonetheless. I had a lot of fun with gen6 manual Golf 2-door. The R is even a better car.

I have a 2016 Golf R and a 997. I bought the Golf R for my 100 mi roundtrip commute, I didn't want to do that in my GTS. I absolutely loved the Golf, my wife drives it now, but if I were you I think I'd probably get the C4. I put 50,000 mi on the car in about 2 years, the car was reliable although it did have the thermostat replaced under warranty.

Originally I was thinking 996 C4S with IMS done. But they don’t have the presence of the 997 C4. If 997 C2, then I’ve also been looking at 2005 with IMS done. There’s a nice example at PCA classifieds at $28k. This is a 5th car so taking time and trying to be smart. I’ve pulled the trigger on too many cars too quickly.

Lots of hype - but no Dragy, dyno or drag strip data.

We’ve had a 2018 Golf R 6 speed for about 10 months now and I love it. It’s fast, has no turbo lag, has a great shifter, makes a cool sound, and is really fun to drive. It’s my wife’s car so I don’t get to drive it much but do any chance I get. About 8000 miles so far and no issues. There are lots of modding/tuning options if that’s your thing. VWVortex is the forum to check out.

Had one, really great car around town, it was little noisy for highway use. Also a little low if you live somewhere that gets a lot of snow. I would not buy a new one unless you are convinced you keep it for a while, tons of used ones and pretty heavy depreciation if you decide to sell.

I guess what I would say is you won't be unhappy with either car.

a simple haldex tune can also make it rwd bias.

I have a 2018 Golf R DSG. I'm a manual guy but I got the DSG for its benefits for tuning. You can easily get more than 500bhp out of this engine, but it's already fantadtic out of the box, which is why I got it for my daily. It does everything you need it to do for a daily driver and everything you want it to do for a fun car... well. I've had mine for a year and I've already put 19000 miles on it. And I have 3 other cars. I haven't tuned it yet but when I do, I will go Unitronic stage 1, possibly stage 2. It's very comfortable to drive it's a very nice place to be and it's just enjoyable every time you're behind the wheel. And it is more than capable. My prior daily was an MK4 GLI 2.8 VR6. Great car. I had that car for 10 years, put 180,000 miles on it doing nothing to it but changing the oil. That 2.8 VR6 is great. It took the Golf R for me to finally replace it for a daily. If you need AWD, there isn't a better daily driver that's practical, comfortable, utilitarian and fun. It's not just an A to B car. It's a blast. Keep it in Race mode (or Custom) and in S drive for maximum revving enjoyment. I'm really looking forward to my tune too. There's a reason why every single car magazine raves about this car and can't really find anything bad to say about it. It's just that good.
I also have more cargo space than my mom's Lexus SUV. Can't get that with a 911.
I also own and drive the snot out of:
