Put some miles on it and/or drive it hard and you may have a different experience. I purchased a 2006 Elise new and within 3 years and 30,000 miles, I had the transmission replaced 3 times and the engine replaced once. The 2nd gear synchros were horrible on that transmission. Each transmission ran about $17,000 and the engine was about $24,000. The warranty repairs exceeded the price of the car. Fun car to drive though, but horrible dependability.
