I am a natural complainer. It's just my nature. And even though I knew going into this Porsche ownership experience that parts would all have a Porsche tax added, I am still occasionally surprised by what they charge for even the most trivial part.

That being said, if you want to put these prices into perspective, here is a funny little article by Freddy Hernandez about his experience with a Lamborghini Murcielago that he bought. It's one of the cars from the Fast and Furious movies and he intended to restore it to it's former movie glory. It's a quick read and the prices might put you in a better mood the next time you're at the Porsche parts counter.

Yikes....... I am being totally honest here.... I have no desire to own one of these exotics. None. My buddy owned three Ferraris (all at different times) and they were pure nightmares..... unbelievable. I was speaking to the tech at a Ferrari dealer when he had my buddy's F355 transaxle down.... an Irish fellow, he said this little 8" neoprene hose in a blister pack was $150. I said I could by a whole spool for that money... he said "ah but it doesn't have the prancing horse on it now does it". True story.

Peace

Lately I've been tempted by Ferrari California prices but there's a reason these cars keep drifting down. I think the happiest I've ever been outside of finding a C-note in my winter coat while at college was when I went to replace a broken door handle for my R129.

When the parts guy came back and only wanted $12 I thought for sure he made a mistake. Nope, nearly all of the upper range Mercs used the same part at that time (mid 90s)

I recently replaced the front axle on my 2006 C4S. It was exactly the same price as what I paid for the front axle of my daughter's Scion tC.

Porsche parts are not crazy expensive .... I had a Grand Cherokee and Chrysler OEM parts are CRAZY expensive !! I actually fond Porsche parts not that bad when compared to the domestic big 3 mfg's.

Try getting parts for a vintage Vette (C1 or C2). My brother and I used to have a profitable hobby restoring and fixing these cars until the parts cost more than we could afford to carry.

How’d you get the Scion part to fit on your P?

So far I've been lucky. No significant problems with my previous 99 F355 or current 95 F355. Of course some are nightmares but that could be said for any make.

If you can do your own work and know where to buy parts it helps with cost tremendously.

Cross shopped a Ferrari 360 or 430. Reading about the upkeep made me pause. Interior parts, windows and the upkeep had some horror stories.

Love the 997 but still feel the allure of a prancing horse.

One of the reasons I have found Porsche parts prices can seem high is that some dealers mark-up their prices above Porsche recommended list price. Not naming any names, but I have experienced more than one dealer in the DC/Baltimore area charging more than the Porsche list prices.

Have you ever compared your dealer service invoice parts prices to Porsche list prices shown on web sites like Suncoast Parts or others?

My local dealership gives 10-15% off with PCA membership. At the end of the day its usually the same as sun coast when you add in their shipping. I usually go with whoever is faster to ship it to me.

Try owning an airplane! Plane maintenance makes high end cars seem downright cheap!

We can always get even much better prices if we found a manufacturer who makes them. Anywhere from plugs, water pumps, all suspension, glass, belts...someone should spend time and cross parts from PET.

Me too. Currently looking at manual transmission F430s.
