Over-rev Report Possible?
So with a couple of rev report threads recently it made me think back to when I was looking for my car a couple years ago. The following over-rev report is a car that I was looking at and did not buy, but is this over-rev report even possible? I would think that range 1 ignitions will always be more than range 2 ignitions all the way up to 6. That being the case how could it only have 81 range 3 ignitions, but have 343, 620 & 223 (all exceeding the range 3 ignitions) in the range 4, 5 & 6 category. Are they bogus or am I not understanding? Again this was not my car so it is someone else’s issue, but I am just wondering.

Well, for one, that report is NOT from a Porsche scan tool, since they don't present that way. So, based on that, you can't draw too many additional conclusions.

I wonder, Range 3 is 7700-7899, so that range is only 199, where Range 4 is 7900-8399 (so 499), Range 5 is 8400-9499 (so 1099) and range 6 is 9500 and up. So a mishift may have quickly spun the car up to 9500+ (zipping quickly up through the ranges and recording only a few ignitions on the way up) and maybe the driver didn't catch it at first, and spent some time in Range 6, descending into Range 5 and then finally put in the clutch at the top of Range 4, where the revs quickly dropped back down through the ranges?

Your assumption of decreasing frequency as the ranges get higher is correct IMO. I don't believe there's a way to have fewer overrevs in a lower range than a higher one, but I also don't know how else to explain that report.

Cutoff should occur at 7500 rpms, with some lag you will go into range 2. There's no way a missed shift will go beyond range 2. Range 3 to 6 has to occur on poorly timed downshifts. No way to tell how fast they were going when the downshift occurred, how many gears they downshifted, or if they pushed the clutch in when they realized they screwed up.

The only way I could imagine having lower number of ignitions in the mid ranges vs the higher ranges ( besides a glitch) is that there were misfires during the over-rev event(s).

Wow I am glad I did not buy that car. Anybody out there buy a silver 2010 base in the Denver area in February 2018?

best to have it run on a piwis at dealer or durametric at a good indie
it doesn't look good at all, but the numbers are showing real funny - not how even a bad read out should look

All good suggestions, but you'll notice doclouie said this was a report from a car he was looking at prior to buying his, so an old DME report on a car he doesn't own, so I doubt further investigation is even possible.

Yea this is one of many cars I was looking at that I did not buy. I also wonder if the owner doctored the rev report. I hope not because someone bought that car. Just with all the rev questions going on it made me think if it is even possible to have a report like this. The more I think about it. It does not look like this is even possible. Something funny there.
