Good to see another BMW guy on here! I have a handful of modded BMWs in the garage still, so I was actually expecting the 997 to feel like it needed a ton of parts to feel as good, but I was pleasantly surprised at how capable the 997 is right out of the box. I find myself simply enjoying the car rather than feeling obligated to mod like I've done with the BMWs in the past. Stock for stock, it's really no comparison...and even modded BMW vs stock Porsche, I've begun to really understand what the hype is all about.

Per your question, the 997 is certainly a great car for the money right now and I don't think they'll be going much lower, but the same can be said for the E46 M3 market. I think for any used car, you'll expect to be shelling out money, so the money your E46 M3 will cost you might be a wash with the 997. BMW maintenance feels like a drop in the hat compared to some P-car items. What exactly do you need to do to the M3 in the near future? How many miles?

I could probably squeeze another 10 hp out of it for another $10k. If you really want to increase the power of the 911, a turbo is probably your best bet.
its not about power for me. A 500hp m5 can feel as slow as a 100hp tin can. The power is there for the 997, its the delivery and sensation of speed that needs tweaking imo. Maybe i havent driven one enough. I hope to get into something soon.

im approaching 200k and have alot more id like to do so a 997 might just be the better choice for me. As you stated stock for stock there is no compparrison the M cars certainly have alot of charecter though.

The M3 is terrific for a muscle sedan. It is still not a sports car. The 997 is a sports car and more unique with the rear engine. Both cars have character in different ways. If the lack of torque is a turn off, you probably won't be real happy with a 997 even with mods. A turbo would solve that but not with your budget. Not sure how you improve the sensation of speed in a 997 unless louder exhausts and harsher suspension on the street gives you that sensation.

The 997 is the fastest responding car I have ever driven, if that's what you mean by delivery. But, the PDK is responsible for much of that.

If I'm not mistaken, the E46 engine has less torque and displacement than a 997.1 base model.

Generally, the aftermarket exhaust systems sold in the USA sound a lot deeper than that. That sounds like stock with the center bypass. Check this out:

I owned various M3s, Porsches, and Ferraris. I will leave the Sportiness definition for someone else to define.

I can tell you that the 997S feels good right out of the gate. The maintenance is more extensive than a Honda or Toyota but speed costs money. A BMW at high mileage will cost the same as a Porsche to keep up anyway. Starters, water pump, radiator, brakes, clutch, fuel pump are all going to need replacement north of 00K miles, and I am talking about the BMW. No difference for the Porsche.

I find the 997S combination of speed, acceleration, tight suspension, turn in, handling, just about perfect for my style of driving. It feels like a dog compared to my 996 GT3 but that is not a fair comparison.

I also have the full FabSpeed intake and exhaust, as well as an ECU tune, on my 997.2S. It's a bit load, but sounds real nice.
