Default 997.2 C4 vs...

Good evening, folks. In my search for a car, I've driven a '08 997 C2S, a '10 997.2 C2S and a '11 997.2 C2, all manuals. How does the 997.2 C4 fit in? Aside from the cosmetics, slightly wider rear track and additional maintenance, will it feel like a pig vs the C2? Or will it simply come down to the difference in handling of 2wd vs awd?

Thank you in advance!

What will you be using the car for? Weekends, daily commute? Will you store it in the winter? Do you live in cold country? Will you be doing autocross and HPDE’s? That will help us help you.

I haven't driven all those, but I have driven .1 C2 and C4S. It was fun wiggling the back end around in the C2. The C4S certainly handles better for me. Without ringing their necks, performance was good for both on the street. I am sure I could go faster in a 4 or 4S at the track. Why would a C4 be a pig? It's how much heavier than a C2? The wider track is a plus. The .2 C4 I thought has 10 hp less than a .1 C2S, correct? I needed AWD. I preferred a 4 aesthetically regardless, but that is spitting hairs. Any 4 or 4S with a manual with right condition, miles, and color qualified for me. The HP difference was not near enough to be a factor. A 100hp difference would have meant something.

Drive it! I love the .2 C4S: arguably faster out of corners, unbelievable grip with good tires. I live in Deep South Texas where there is very little cold weather but I love the wider hips and the total control. The more I drive it and learn its capabilities, the more I like it.

But it might not be for you. Drive it before you decide.

Fair question. Occasional commute, mainly a fun car for days off and enjoying the wonderful back roads of NC. It won't likely be stored because there are too many days that are perfect for driving in the winter here. An occasional HDPE would be fun.

My main concern of the C4 vs C2 is the effect of the additional drag and weight on the 3.6. I wouldn't care if it were a 997.2 C4S. Anyone driven the standard (non S) 997.2 C2 and C4 back to back? I generally prefer 2wd as it's easier to adjust the attitude of the car in the corner. Though, I do appreciate the merits of a good awd system at the limits.

I drove a 997.2 C4S before buying a 997.2 C2S. The steering feels a little different and the C4S is a tick slower. I don't know why they make the rear of the C4S 1 1/2" wider. It doesn't feel like it accomplishes much. In either case, you have a low torque car with most of the weight in the rear with foot wide tires.

In practice the difference is minor. To see drag races between various 997.2 models, jump to the 2m33s mark in the following video...

I haven't owned a C2 or C2S but have driven them and have owned two C4S's. There's definitely nothing "piggish" about a C4S compared to a C2S. Performance wise, the C4/C4S is slightly heavier but the difference is so slight that if anyone can tell the difference in acceleration to their RWD siblings they have a better butt dyno than I do. Official 0-60 numbers I've seen are mostly identical with some giving the the AWD a tenth or two advantage.

Handling is different though. The AWD almost feels like a moving suction cup on the road, even a wet road. You can make the rear dance around a bit but you really gotta work on making it happen. Also, the steering wheel feedback on the AWD feels a little numb compared the RWD.

If I had to sum it up, to my senses I'd say the C2/C2S feels a little livelier, mainly because of the lack of the additional hardware up front on the C4/C4S and the AWD itself. That comes at the expense (?) of the amazing sense of stability and the looks of the wide body preferred by many. That's part of what sold me on the GTS. Wide body with the more visceral feel of the RWD in one package.
