997.1 vs 997.2 PDK

Mechanically I don’t think there is any difference between 09-10 or 11-12 997.2 pdk. I believe there was a software update which made the shifts smoother

This has been discussed at length here and it seems really difficult to get good info on it. Even my service advisor at the dealership agrees. For example, when the PDK on my -09 C4S failed (early 2013 I believe), the replacement unit was completely different. Smoother? Yes, but I would use the word slower along with smoother since that's what it was or ar least felt like. The PDK that failed snapped through the gears in sport plus with unbelievable speed and precision. No, it wasn't smooth but neither was it uncomfortable in any way. Sport plus is a performance mode, not a comfort mode so it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Shift as quickly as possible with as little lag as possible. The replacement unit got away from this. Even in sport plus mode it sort of rolled over from one gear to the next instead of the snap shifts in the earlier version. Smoother.....yes, but to me it felt like performance had given way to comfort. Then to make it even more complicated, the PDK in my current GTS feels like somewhere in between the original -09 unit and the replacement unit installed 2013.

As I understand it, the mechanics are the same but subsequent software versions were to soften the shifting to improve reliability. Once you update you can't go back. So if you like the harder shifting make sure you don't allow a software update if you take your car in for service.
I'm not sure if the software changes were really enough to change the service interval from 60K miles to 120K, but my oil and filter were like new when changed at 60K anyway. OTOH, the interval change might be for unknown (to me) mechanical changes with the 991.
I'm at 118K now so I'll have an excuse to examine all four drive train fluids soon.

So, this brings me to another question. Having called and looked at a few PDK cars for sale, I have talked with a couple of owners that state they (on a regular driving basis) drive their 997.2 in Sports Plus mode and manual shift. I assume a PDK trans oil or full pan/filter service should be preformed. I have mixed answers rom P car shops that suggest to "spill and fill" vs a complete fluid, pan and filter replacement. What have you PDK owners done in regards to your PDK service at 6 years or 40k miles driven?

I drained and filled at ~6 years. The early 09 pdk drain plug had a propensity to strip requiring pan with integrated filter replacement. One RL'r who had his pan replaced posted his pan filter pic and it looked pristine.

Good information. Thanks.

I had the 60K maintenance done early on my 09 C2S and they said my PDK oil and filter were fine. I bought the car with 52k miles and I just wanted to make sure everything was good.

Just recently had the 60k PDK clutch service done, and also did the 120k PDK gear service with new pan at the same time (I'm at 80k). I had no idea if the prior owner did the 60k service and my transaxle flange seals needed to be replaced, so just had it all done now (especially considering the age of the fluids). To me it was due and well overdue.
